Decoys could blunt spread of ash-killing beetles

As the emerald ash borer ravages North American ash trees, threatening the trees' very survival, a team of entomologists and engineers may have found a way to prevent the spread of the pests. "Within 25 years, practically no ash trees may remain on either side of the St. Lawrence Seaway," said Akhlesh Lakhtakia, Charles Godfrey Binder Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State.

Environmental engineer Bruce Logan elected to national academy

Penn State environmental engineer Bruce Logan has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the organization announced today (Feb. 7).

Logan is one of 69 new members and 11 foreign associates elected for 2013, bringing the total membership to 2,250 and foreign associates to 211.

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice or education as well as pioneering new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.

Researchers link visibility and safety from roadway lighting

Driving at night is no picnic and can be fraught with danger, given the sometimes severe visibility limits and scarce reaction time. While roadway lighting can improve visibility at night and give drivers more response time to potential hazards, relating visibility from roadway lighting to nighttime driving safety has been limited by a shortage of data and lack of consideration of vehicle headlights.

To address this issue, Eric Donnell, associate professor at Penn State and faculty researcher at the University's Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute, in collaboration with researchers at the Lighting Research Center, developed a unique parallel approach to lighting safety analysis.

Feb. 12 blood drive to benefit THON

Engineering dean Wormley to retire

Following a distinguished career as a researcher, professor and the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of Penn State's College of Engineering, David N. Wormley has announced his retirement effective this summer. "The college is in a very good situation," Wormley said of his decision to retire. "It has a strong foundation with great faculty, staff and students. It is a favorable time to have this transition in leadership." Wormley was appointed dean of the College of Engineering on July 1, 1992. He has been a champion of engineering education. During his tenure, the College of Engineering has sought to develop world-class engineers by emphasizing student experiences in globalization, innovation and leadership.

'BTN LiveB1G' to spotlight Penn State on Feb. 5

BTN's new series, "BTN LiveB1G," continues Feb. 5, with stories highlighting how the Penn State community is making an impact in State College and around the world. The program will air at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time.

The Penn State-focused episode will highlight the College of Agricultural Science's Turfgrass Science Program, which is researching ways to increase the resilience of athletic playing surfaces to help reduce the number and severity of head and leg injuries. Also, Penn Staters have created a free mobile app, downloaded by farmers around the country, called DairyCents, which tracks feed costs and income information to help them with financial planning. The episode also will feature the Lunar Lion team, a group of Penn State students, faculty and engineers throughout the University who are involved in a competition to build a spacecraft to land on the moon. Additional segments include men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers and THON.

Student's startup company wins international award

Advait Kumar, a third-year electrical engineering student, recently received an international award through his startup company, Swajal. The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) awarded Kumar funding for his project that focuses on a cheap, clean drinking water supply for villages in the industrial belts in India.

Siemens CEO says U.S. manufacturing poised for comeback

Eric Spiegel, president and CEO of Siemens' U.S. subsidiary, said the United States is poised for a manufacturing renaissance during his visit to campus Thursday (Jan. 24) to mark a new agreement with Penn State. Spiegel's remarks came during a presentation on innovation and entrepreneurship Thursday to engineering students titled "The Need for 'Real' Engineering in America."

Couple gives $2.5 million to endow chair in industrial engineering

An industrial engineering alumnus and his wife have made a $2.5 million gift to the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State for a faculty chair focused on energy and energy policy research.

"Energy and energy policy is one of the most important issues for our nation to address," said Paul Griffin, the Peter and Angela Dal Pezzo Department Head Chair. "Industrial engineering can play an important role in this area for users, providers and policymakers. This includes assisting organizations to use energy more efficiently, developing new decision-support technologies for energy providers for generation and distribution and helping inform energy policymakers of the true costs and risks of energy alternatives from a systems perspective. Having an endowed chair in this area will allow our department to leverage our existing strengths and establish a strong foundation that we can build from to better address energy challenges."
