'Research Unplugged' to feature discussion on hydrogen economy

Bruce Logan, Kappe professor of environmental engineering and director of the Hydrogen Energy Center, will discuss fuel cells at Research Unplugged at noon April 5 in the Downtown Theatre in State College. The hourlong event is titled "Future Fuel? On the road to a hydrogen economy." Free light refreshments will be provided.

Seminar to discuss methods of predicting potential dangers in road designs

Frank Gross, a doctoral degree candidate in civil engineering, will present "Case-Control and Cohort Studies: Alternative Methods for Estimating Crash Modification Factors" at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in 213 Transportation Research Building, University Park. The talk is part of the Transportation Engineering Seminar Series and is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute. The event is free to the public. Gross will talk about the proposed use of the case-control method and the cohort study as a new approach to determining safety performance of roads.

Pysher earns Staff Excellence Award

Susan Pysher, coordinator of administrative support systems in the College of Engineering at Penn State University Park, has been selected to receive the Staff Excellence Award. Established in 1993, this award recognizes the consistently outstanding performance of a staff member who has demonstrated and practiced the philosophy of continuous quality improvement, team spirit, managerial excellence in the performance of assigned duties, and leadership in establishing a quality service orientation, so as to benefit his or her unit and the University.

Irwin honored with mentoring award

Mary Jane Irwin, who holds the A. Robert Noll Chair in Engineering at Penn State University Park, will receive the 2006 Howard B. Palmer Faculty Mentoring Award. The Palmer Award honors and recognizes outstanding achievement by a faculty member with at least five years of active service who effectively guides junior faculty. Howard Palmer was the senior associate dean of The Graduate School from 1984 to 1991.

Melton, Shapiro selected to receive Eisenhower Award for distinguished teaching

Robert G. Melton, professor and director of undergraduate studies for aerospace engineering at Penn State University Park, and David Shapiro, professor of economics, demography and women's studies also at the University Park campus, have been selected for the 2006 Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching. The award recognizes excellence in teaching and student support among tenured faculty who have been employed full time for at least five years with undergraduate teaching as a major portion of their duties. Milton S. Eisenhower, brother of former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, served as president of Penn State from 1950 to 1956.

2006 Kavanagh Lecture to focus on engineering for security

Jeremy Isenberg, retired president and chief executive officer of Weidlinger Associates Inc., will present "Engineering for Security" at 7:30 p.m. March 30 in the Applied Research Laboratory Auditorium, University Park. Isenberg's presentation is the 2006 Thomas C. Kavanagh Memorial Structural Engineering Lecture and is sponsored by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The event is free to the public.

Talk to focus on local environmental efforts

Elizabeth Goreham, a member of the State College Borough Council, will speak about current environmental initiatives and policies in Centre County at 7 p.m. March 21 in 121 Sparks Building, University Park. The event, sponsored by Penn State's Center for Sustainability, is free to the public.

Atkins awarded first Six Sigma 'black belt'

Penn State's Quality and Manufacturing Management (QMM) program has certified its first Six Sigma "black belt." Six Sigma is a business improvement process practiced by a majority of Fortune 500 firms. It uses statistical tools, techniques and performance metrics to reduce defects and minimize variations to virtually zero as a means of achieving total customer satisfaction.

Students prepare for Katrina spring break trip; barbecue fund-raiser is Friday

Throughout the semester, a group of 50 students from the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural Sciences have been preparing for a trip to Louisiana to aid in the relief effort. On Friday, the students will conduct a fund-raiser with Clem's Barbecue of State College from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Cellar Market, located just north of Eisenhower Auditorium. People may walk up or drive up to purchase food.

'Automobiles of the Future' to be lecture topic

Joel Anstrom, director of the Hybrid and Hydrogen Vehicle Research Center and the Department of Energy Graduate Automotive Technology Education Center, will discuss "Automobiles of the Future" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb . 28, in 101 Chambers Building, University Park. This is part of the Center for Sustainability Speaker Series. His talk focuses on the latest available technologies in the automobile industry. The event is free to the public. Tan receives Outstanding Dissertation Award

Carol Tan, a former graduate student in civil engineering, has received the Pikarsky Award for Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation in Science and Technology from the Council of University Transportation Centers. Tan's dissertation was titled "An Investigation of Comfortable Lateral Acceleration of Horizontal Curves." The study examined both passenger comfort and the safety margin against skidding on horizontal curves. Before 2004, design values were based on studies conducted in the 1930s and 1940s. Tan received her doctorate in civil engineering in 2005.

ANGEL users to log on using WebAccess beginning in March

Information Technology Services will implement the use of WebAccess for users logging on to Penn State's Course Management System, ANGEL, at http://cms.psu.edu/ on March 6. The new log-on process will allow individuals to log on once using a Penn State Access Account or Friends of Penn State account userid and password to any Penn State service using WebAccess, then be able to access any other without logging on again.

Symposium to showcase engineering science graduate research

The Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics Graduate Student Council presented its Graduate Student Symposium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in 113 Information Science and Technology Building. The event featured research presentations from more than a dozen engineering science and mechanics graduate students, as well as poster sessions. Richard McNitt, professor emeritus and former head of engineering science and mechanics, provided the event's opening remarks.

Student group to hold metalcasting career fair and forum

The Penn State student chapter of the American Foundry Society will be the hosts for the eighth annual Metalcasting Technology Forum and Career Fair from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the lobby of Leonhard Building, University Park. Companies will be on hand seeking students for summer internships, co-ops and full-time positions. The job fair will be followed by a seminar, "Running a Manufacturing Facility -- Things I Never Learned in School," presented by industrial engineering alumnus Chris Buck.

Honorary degree nominations sought

The Committee on Honorary Degrees is seeking input for a list of potential recipients of an honorary doctoral degree from Penn State. The list will include eminent scholars, performers, artists and practitioners in academic fields, and individuals who have made particularly distinguished contributions to society in areas such as public service, business or government. The committee welcomes nominations of individuals eligible to receive a Penn State honorary degree.
