Eleven SPSEA students from the College of Education participated in an urban teaching trip to Chicago this past semester, which included a visit to Erie Elementary Charter School, a bilingual charter school, and volunteer work at McCormick Elementary School.

Kathleen Bieschke will become the new department head for the Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE) Department in the College of Education at Penn State on July 1. In her new role, Bieschke will oversee two undergraduate, four master’s, and four doctoral programs for the college.

Passion for education reform drives Penn State Law students

Although students Sarah Whittington and Stephen Worthington came to Penn State Law from vastly different geographical regions—Whittington from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Worthington from Cedar City, Utah—they quickly discovered that they share a lot in common. Both studied history in college, Worthington at Utah State University and Whittington at Connecticut College. Both agree that education reform in the United States is necessary. And both came to Penn State Law planning to get involved with the student organization Law and Education Alliance at Penn State (LEAP).

Education major graduates early despite cerebral palsy, financial obstacles

It is incredible enough that Diana Livingston is graduating from Penn State Berks at the age of 20 with a bachelor of science in elementary and kindergarten education along with her twin sister, Krisandra, on May 4. It is astonishing that she was able to graduate two years before her peers despite having cerebral palsy and financial obstacles.

Penn State teams up with Taiwanese university to create learning sciences center

Penn State University and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) have developed a collaboration to establish the Advanced Center for the Study of the Learning Sciences. Under a proposal funded by the Taiwan National Science Council, center researchers will devise ways for educators to keep pace with rapidly changing information and technology in society. Behavioral and neuro-cognitive research will serve as focal points for the center’s work.

The rise of online and distance education in recent years has brought quality learning to the masses but also presents challenges for educators and system designers. The shift from face-to-face interaction between instructors and students to computer-mediated forms of communication, according to a doctoral candidate at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), highlights the importance of understanding how such interactions are affected by the way educational systems are designed.
