Campers develop skills at Penn State’s youth summer camps

New this year, the School of Visual Arts Summer Art Camp (July 7 to 12) will teach high school students who are interested in the visual arts how to create a portfolio of their work. The camp’s theme, “Portfolio Processes,” underscores the goals of the program – to show campers how to create exciting artworks in different media and to develop a digital portfolio. The camp coincides with the 2013 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

Two episodes of a sports magazine show produced by students in the College of Communications at Penn State will air today, May 3, and Friday, May 10, on WPSU. Each of the different episodes will air at 10 p.m.

Just as people have embraced computers and smart phones, they may also give their blessing to talking tissue boxes and other smart objects, according to Penn State researchers. "Smart objects will become more and more a part of our daily lives," said S. Shyam Sundar, Distinguished Professor of Communications and co-director of the Media Effects Research Laboratory.

Eleven young Penn Staters honored with Alumni Achievement Award April 12

Eleven young Penn State alumni were honored for outstanding professional accomplishment and presented with the Penn State Alumni Association's Alumni Achievement Award at a dinner ceremony April 12 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus. This year’s honorees work for nationally recognized organizations such as the New York Times, the National Earthquake Information Center and a popular website called CareerBliss. Some started their own companies and one works on the National Security Staff at the White House.

Public radio’s weekly media criticism show, “On the Media,” produced by WNYC and NPR, was selected as the 2012 recipient of the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism, presented annually by the College of Communications at Penn State.

Five Penn State students in their respective areas of leadership have been honored with the 2013 John W. Oswald Award. Gizelle Studevent is the recipient in the field of athletics; John Hadlock, creative/performing arts; Kristin Winiarski, journalism; Rachel Chang, representing scholarship; and Bridgette Carrier, social services. The John W. Oswald Award, established in 1983, annually recognizes graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at least one of several areas of activity at the University. The award consists of a medallion honoring John W. Oswald, president of the University from 1970 to 1983.

College of Communications repeats as national champion

The College of Communications has captured back-to-back national championships in the overall intercollegiate standings in the William R. Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program. The annual competition -- known as "the Pulitzers of college journalism" -- is open to students from the country’s 106 nationally accredited undergraduate mass communication programs.
