Orland recognized with Undergraduate Program Leadership Award

Brian Orland, professor of landscape architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture, is the recipient of the 2011 Undergraduate Program Leadership Award. The award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership benefiting a Penn State undergraduate degree program. Specifically, it recognizes those individuals who have major responsibilities for the delivery of undergraduate education within a unit and who are providing leadership that has transformed or revitalized the undergraduate program in some way.

Blasko, Johnson receive Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching

Dawn G. Blasko, associate professor of psychology at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and Timothy P. Johnson, associate professor of landscape architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture, are recipients of the 2011 Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching. The award recognizes excellence in teaching and student support among tenured faculty who have been employed full time for at least five years with undergraduate teaching as a major portion of their duties. Milton S. Eisenhower, brother of former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, served as president of Penn State from 1950 to 1956.

Speakers for Research Unplugged series announced

The first signs of spring mark the return to downtown State College of Research Unplugged, a non-traditional lecture series where experts from varying fields lead conversations with community members. All six Research Unplugged talks will be held Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m., at the Penn State Downtown Theatre on Allen Street. On March 23, join sociology professor Sam Richards and colleague Danna Jayne Seballos of the "World in Conversation Project" to find out "Why Race Still Matters: Creating Conversations in 21st Century Classrooms."

Satellite radio host Preston Trombly to judge at Graduate Exhibition

A voice familiar to classical music lovers will soon be heard on Penn State's University Park campus, when SiriusXM Satellite Radio host Preston Trombly visits campus to serve as a judge for the annual Graduate Exhibition, to take place March 25 and 27. Trombly's participation is a step toward meeting The Graduate School's goal of engaging a wider audience in Penn State research and graduate education.

Speaker to discuss her fight against mountain-top removal March 15

Lorelei Scarbro, community organizer, alternative energy advocate and opponent of the mining practice known as mountain-top removal (MTR), will give a public lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, in the jury space on the first floor of the Stuckeman Family Building on Penn State's University Park campus. She will discuss the current status of MTR in West Virginia, the prospects for alternative and sustainable energy production in the state, and community-building for education and social action.

'Big Boy Toys' on exhibition in Borland Gallery

"Big Boy Toys," an exhibition featuring life-sized buildable toy sculptures by Matthew Olson, a first year master of fine arts candidate in sculpture, will run through March 4, in the Borland Gallery on the University Park campus. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Landscape architect to deliver Bracken Fellow Lecture on Feb. 24

Landscape architect Achva Benzinberg Stein will give a free public lecture, "The Shape of the Content," at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, in 110 Business Building, on Penn State's University Park campus. Stein's lecture is sponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture's Bracken Lecture Series.

Penn State School of Music faculty to perform April 30 in Boalsburg

Members of the faculty in Penn State's School of Music will be featured during the "Music at the Boal Mansion" spring concert and reception at 8 p.m. on April 30, in Boalsburg, Pa. Organized by Penn State professor and clarinetist Anthony Costa, musical selections will range from those of early 19th Century masters Chopin and Mendelssohn to pieces by contemporary composers.

President's Concert a 'win-win' for students, alumni

As Penn State's drum major, sophomore Ian Kenney is used to performing before enthusiastic audiences in excess of 100,000 people. However, he'll be getting a very different performance experience on Friday, Feb. 25, when he dons more formal attire to sing tenor with the Penn State Concert Choir in the fifth annual Penn State President's Concert, being held this year at the Strathmore Music Center near Washington, D.C.

"It's about as opposite of an environment as you can get from Beaver Stadium," Kenney, a sophomore music education major studying voice, said of performing at a major concert hall. "It will be one-hundreth the number of people in the audience, and I get to share the stage with 50 or so members of the choir, instead of having just me in the spotlight." In that sense, the amount of pressure on him is greatly lessened. However, he said, "it's an incredible venue, so it's 100 percent of the same excitement to perform there. It's going to be a phenomenal concert."

Artist, Penn State alumnus, to give lecture Feb. 15

Penn State alumnus and painter Brian Alfred will give a free public lecture at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium at the Palmer Museum of Art on Penn State's University Park campus. Alfred's lecture is sponsored by the Penn State School of Visual Arts' John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.

Pianist to hold recital, master class at School of Music

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Franz Liszt, the School of Music of Penn State, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Liszt Society, is sponsoring a recital and master class by well-known pianist Enrico Pace, winner of the International Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht. A master class will take place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9, in Esber Recital Hall, in Music Building I. A free recital of music by Liszt will be held at 8 p.m. on Feb. 10; the program will consist of the first book of Liszt's "Pilgrimage Years" followed by the "Sonata in B Minor."

Writer Phoebe Hoban to lecture Feb. 3 at Palmer Lipcon Auditorium

Writer Phoebe Hoban will give a free public lecture, titled "ALICE NEEL: The Art of Not Sitting Pretty," at 7 p.m. Feb. 3, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium at the Palmer Museum of Art on Penn State's University Park campus. Hoban's lecture is co-sponsored by the Palmer Museum of Art and Penn State School of Visual Arts' John M. Anderson Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series.

Palmer Museum of Art presents 'John Rogers: American Stories'

Palmer Museum of Art has announced the opening of the exhibition "John Rogers: American Stories" on Feb. 22. The exhibition, organized by the New York Historical Society and drawn from its comprehensive collection of works by the artist, will be on view through May 15. The Palmer Museum of Art is located on Curtin Road and admission is free. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and some holidays. Reduced hours over Spring break (March 5-13) will be from noon to 4 p.m.
