Call center serves as starting place for many returning adult learners

Denise Gray's voice is calm, almost nurturing. And despite the fact that the young woman she's talking to, in the military overseas, is on the phone and can't see her, Gray has a concerned expression on her face. It's 2 p.m. on a recent afternoon in the call center of Adult Learner Enrollment Services--a unit of Penn State Outreach that is the central information source for the University's adult student population.

Tammy Terry, right, of Mount Union, Pa., and her daughter Aubrey McMullen review pictures from the Penn State World Campus' commencement open house held Dec. 18, at the Outreach Building on Penn State's University Park campus. During commencement ceremonies, Terry received an associate degree in human development and family studies after three years of study both online through World Campus and at Penn State's Learning Center in Lewistown, Pa. She said she is now ready to begin her new career helping troubled young people at the Phoenix Center in Alexandria, Pa.

Pennsylvania Army National Guard member earns Penn State degree online

When Staff Sgt. Kriss Berry of Harrisburg returned from a year in Afghanistan in 2006, he enrolled at Penn State Harrisburg to complete a college degree he had begun a few years earlier at a community college. Taking two to three courses a semester in the evening enabled him to continue his full-time day job with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. But when he was ready for the core courses in his major, Berry faced a dilemma. These courses were only offered during his work time. His solution: Penn State's World Campus, which offers online degree programs. Berry will complete his online bachelor of science degree in criminal justice this month.

Video: Students take advantage of center's advice to entrepreneurs

In this video the Penn State Small Business Development Center (SBDC) highlights services offered to all entrepreneurs, including Penn State students. The center offers free and confidential assistance to entrepreneurs. The Penn State SBDC deals mostly with the public, but lately Penn State students have stopped in for advice, including World Campus student Ron Thomas.

Penn State is named a military-friendly institution

Last year, Penn State had more than 2,600 course enrollments by military service members and veterans, or 11 percent of total enrollment, in Penn State World Campus, the University's online campus. One reason so many military personnel are choosing World Campus is the flexibility of anytime, anywhere learning, which is ideally suited for servicemembers deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and other overseas installations. Penn State's commitment to increasing access to education for military personnel, veterans and military family members is being honored with the 2009 Ray Ehrensberger Award for Institutional Excellence in Military Education from the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE). AAACE's Commission on Military Education and Training (CMET) presented the award Nov. 3 in Cleveland.

Penn State online GIS program earns top national honor

When hurricanes, wildfires or other disasters strike, emergency services personnel frequently turn to geographic information systems (GIS) to help coordinate their response. Since GIS is a relatively young and rapidly evolving technology, many users learn on the job. Thanks to Penn State's online GIS programs, practitioners can advance their knowledge, skills and careers without putting their lives on hold. The Sloan Consortium recently recognized the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' Master of Geographic Information Systems program delivered through the World Campus as the 2009 Most Outstanding Online Teaching and Learning Program.

Enrollment information sessions for employees are set for Oct. 8

Penn State World Campus, Continuing Education, Student Affairs and Undergraduate Admissions are hosting enrollment information sessions for spring and summer 2010 at two locations on Thursday, Oct. 8: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 129 A-C at HUB-Robeson Cultural Center and 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Centre County Visitor's Center on Park Avenue. At these sessions, Penn State employees can talk with staff from Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Student Aid, Continuing Education, World Campus, and Student Affairs to learn next steps to begin the enrollment process.

Institute prepares next generation of online education leaders

Faculty and staff members from 17 higher education institutions are participating in the new Institute for Emerging Leadership in Online Learning, sponsored by Penn State and the Sloan Consortium, an organization focused on online education.

Heard on Campus: Frank Mayadas on online learning

"Penn State has been one of the leaders to demonstrate the power of online learning," said Sloan Foundation Program Director for Online Education Frank Mayadas on Sept. 17.

During his visit to Penn State's University Park campus, Mayadas talked with Penn State World Campus and Outreach faculty and staff about online learning. He also was honored with Outreach's Fischer Award of Distinction for his work with the Sloan Consortium and his championing of World Campus since the early 1990s.

MyCAA offers $6,000 to military spouses who are interested in pursuing degree programs, licenses or credentials.

Jean McGrath retires after 22 years at Penn State

Jean McGrath, senior director of Adult Learner Services, will retire July 31 after 22 years with Penn State. During her career, she focused her leadership efforts on improving services for students enrolled in independent learning and online courses. McGrath also played a key role in the creation of Penn State's World Campus.

World Campus introduces online corporate communication program

Bureau of Labor Statistics has identified jobs in public relations and corporate communication as among the fastest-growing occupations in today's increasingly tight job market. The Penn State World Campus is introducing an online corporate communication certificate program that aims to help communication professionals broaden their employment horizons in marketing, advertising, public relations, communication, human resources, journalism and customer service.

Penn State World Campus student is first Navy scholarship recipient

For five years, Justin Scinocco was a Navy special warfare combatant-craft crewman (SWCC), a member of an elite team that supports Navy SEALS. He served in Iraq in 2003. In 2011, he enrolled in Penn State's World Campus to prepare for a medical career. For his Navy service and academic achievements, Scinocco has been chosen to receive the first Alexander P. Fletcher Navy Student Award presented by the World Campus.

World Campus military and veteran student enrollment continues to rise

The flexibility of online education is ideal for many adults who want to learn when and where it's convenient to them, and especially beneficial to active-duty military service members deployed in a war zone or where Internet access is limited. Since Penn State's World Campus launched 15 years ago, enrollment by active-duty military service members and veterans has grown steadily -- and more than 120 percent in the last four years.

Pennsylvania’s improving job market is reflected in its unemployment rate, now 7.2 percent in central Pennsylvania, as more companies ramp up hiring. Central Pennsylvania residents who want to learn about job opportunities in this region are invited to attend the sixth annual Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 17, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in Innovation Park. More than 65 employers will be at the event.

A married couple in New Jersey, a State College resident and a civilian worker in Afghanistan will all receive degrees earned online through the World Campus during Penn State’s spring commencement May 3–5. Among the Penn State students graduating during University Park campus commencement are Tom Brown, a civilian worker in Afghanistan; Matthew and Diana Kirk of Riverside, N.J.; and Jamie Reep of State College.

Penn State to invest $20 million to grow World Campus to 45,000 students

Penn State’s online campus, the World Campus, is poised to more than triple students enrolled in online education programs from 12,000 to 45,000 within the next decade. The University is committing $20 million over five years from World Campus revenues toward this new expansion goal. Penn State President Rodney Erickson announced the goal today (April 29) in a letter to the University community.

Human resources society renews Penn State online master’s degree

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has renewed its designation of Penn State’s online master of professional studies in human resources and employment relations (HRER) degree as a program that meets SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidelines. SHRM’s renewal indicates that the program is consistent with the content areas specified by SHRM for a graduate HR program. The guidebook and associated templates developed by SHRM are the result of a highly interactive, ongoing process involving practitioner and academic communities. The program will be listed on the SHRM website.

School violence prevention event April 1 examines child safety, research

Since the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, legislators and policy makers have been searching for ways to prevent school violence. Penn State, in collaboration with several local school districts, will hold a special event April 1 to explore how community advocates and researchers can work together to prevent tragedies in schools.
