Penn State Wilkes-Barre engineering students go solar

Junior and senior electrical engineering technology students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre recently spent time in their EET 497: Special Topics course studying the principles of renewable energy conversion and its sustainability. Their studies include turbo-machinery, hydro power, wind power, solar power, fuel cells, biomass, nuclear power, and geothermal energy resources.

Jonathan Kukta named recipient of F&B Leadership Award

The award will be bestowed by Al Horvath, Penn State's senior vice president for Finance and Business, at a ceremony at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at the Nittany Lion Inn, on the University Park campus.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre announces Executive Management Series event

Beginning at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, May 6, Penn State Wilkes-Barre will be host an Executive Management Breakfast Series at the Best Western Genetti Hotel and Conference Center in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The topic for the May event will focus on how local businesses can improve their customer service by using social media, including Facebook and Twitter.

Wilkes-Barre surveying student selected for outreach program

Christopher Jackson, a senior surveying engineering student at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, will participate in the U.S. Hydro 2011 Conference sponsored by the Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA) this April in Tampa, Fla. Jackson, a native of Robinson Township, Pa., is among a small group of only 20 students invited to this outreach program and will join fellow students from Florida, California, Alaska, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada for the four-day symposium.

Alumni Constituent Society to host bus trip to basketball game

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society is offering a bus trip to the Bryce Jordan Center in State College to watch the Penn State men's basketball team take on the Northwestern Wildcats. The bus will depart from the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13. The trip costs $25 for students or $50 for non-students and includes bus transportation, ticket to the basketball game, and a lunch buffet at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel prior to the 3:30 p.m. game.

Update on Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Career Services Center

Progress is under way for Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Struthers Family Career Services Center.

Thanks to a recent gift from longtime Penn State supporters Richard K. and Sharon Struthers, construction began in the fall on The Struthers Family Career Services Center at the campus. The center will offer both current students and job-changing graduates in the region a comprehensive range of resources. Going beyond traditional services such as resume workshops and career fairs, the center also will provide state-of-the-art technology for video interviews and online job searches.

$1 million pledge jump-starts Wilkes-Barre Career Services Center

Plans are under way for a new Career Services Center at Penn State Wilkes-Barre that will provide students with comprehensive career planning and job seeking services. A major matching gift from Wilkes-Barre alumnus Richard K. "Ric" Struthers and his wife, Sharon, has jump-started the campus' fundraising effort to support the project.

The Struthers have pledged $1 million to Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Their gift will match 50 percent of the cost to build and furnish the new Career Services Center, up to a total commitment of $500,000. The remainder of their commitment will be split with $250,000 going to create the Struthers Family Trustee Scholarship supporting students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre with need. The additional $250,000 will go into an endowment by the Struthers Family, annually supporting the operational expenses of the new Career Services Center.

Honor society students give almost 1,000 pounds of goods to soldiers

Members of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Honor Society have completed their second drive for troops serving overseas. The local honor students recently delivered nearly a thousand pounds of goods ranging from personal grooming products to microwave popcorn, instant hot chocolate, powdered drinks, stationery and envelopes and other items to Give2theTroops in Fairfield, Conn.

DeGraba wins Irene Thomas Memorial Award

Gianna DeGraba, a sophomore at Penn State Wilkes-Barre from Dallas Pa., was the recent recipient of the Irene Thomas Memorial Award. This award is sponsored by Arts at Hayfield -- a nonprofit, community-arts support organization housed on campus -- and is given to an academically accomplished student who has demonstrated commitment to the arts.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre scholarship donors and recipients honored

On Thursday, Oct. 13, Penn State Wilkes-Barre honored 106 students who were awarded scholarships for the 2011-12 school year at the annual Scholarship Dinner held at Appletree Terrace. This year, Penn State Wilkes-Barre awarded 265 students approximately $730,000 in scholarships.
