Rick, Sue Barry create $1 million scholarship at Wilkes-Barre campus

Penn State Wilkes-Barre has received one of the largest scholarship gifts in its history from two of the University's most generous supporters, Rick and Sue Barry. The $1 million commitment from the San Rafael, Calif., couple to establish the Rick and Sue Barry Trustee Scholarship will leverage matching funds from Penn State and help more than 30 students with financial need each year.

Strategic plan's third goal bolsters sustainable behaviors, facilities

Penn State's University Sustainability Council is drafting the University's first strategic plan for sustainability. The council is seeking public input for five-goal plan during the drafting process. The third goal seeks to support and recognize efforts to make individual behaviors and facilities more resource efficient as well as celebrate the broader impact of Penn State through alumni and partners. "Goal 3 calls on us to 'walk the talk,' " explained Erik Foley, director of the Penn State Campus Sustainability Office, and member of the council. "Opportunities are everywhere to improve operational effectiveness, promote wellness and control costs through smart sustainability practices in our offices, labs, classrooms, residence halls and dining areas. And because Penn State thrives beyond our walls, especially through our alumni, Goal 3 also asks how we can further engage and recognize their sustainability leadership."

Sunday hurricane update: some campuses without power

According to Philly.com, Hurricane Irene caused dangerous flooding and widespread damage across southeastern Pennsylvania, leaving half a million people without power. A power outage has caused Penn State Schuylkill to close today (Sunday, Aug. 28). Penn State Abington also is closed today. That campus announced today's closure in advance of the storm. Penn State Lehigh Valley is without power and phone service, and has canceled the nursing graduation. Check http://www.lv.psu.edu/ for updates. No reports have been received from other Penn State campuses.

Nurses learn healing touch in Wilkes-Barre Northern Tier Center course

A group of registered nurses gathered recently for a Penn State Wilkes-Barre Northern Tier Center course dedicated to a lost nursing art: massage. The nurses learned basic massage techniques to improve circulation, promote relaxation and ease pain. In addition, the nurses practiced methods that will be used to provide post-event massages for cyclists in the 100-mile Tour de Shunk, a charity bike ride scheduled for Sept. 18 that benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Arts at Hayfield Summer Festival scheduled at Wilkes-Barre

On Sunday, Aug. 28, more than 120 artisans, crafters, musicians, and food vendors will converge on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman for the 27th annual Arts at Hayfield Summer Festival from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine, on the campus grounds. Featuring a new performing group, the Daisy Jug Band, local and regional performers will take the stage starting at 11:30 a.m.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni golf tournament raises more than $8,000

More than $8,000 was raised by the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society's 16th annual "Masters" Golf Tournament, held July 15 at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountaintop, Pa. The event topped last year's tournament total by more than $1,200. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society's scholarship fund, the Student Mentor Program, Academic Excellence Awards, and other initiatives that help the students at the Wilkes-Barre campus.

On Friday, July 15, the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society will host its 16th annual Penn State Masters Golf Tournament at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountain Top, Pa. The tournament raises money to support the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society's Scholarship Fund, the Student Mentor Program, Academic Excellence Awards, and other initiatives that help students at Wilkes-Barre campus.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre offers Summer Youth Program scholarships

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education currently is offering a limited number of scholarships for students wishing to attend the campus' Summer Youth Programs. The scholarships, underwritten by Procter & Gamble's Live, Learn, and Thrive Program and the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society, help defray the costs of attending the camps at Penn State Wilkes-Barre this summer. The scholarships will cover the cost of the camp tuition and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for those who qualify.

Update on Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Career Services Center

Progress is under way for Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Struthers Family Career Services Center.

Thanks to a recent gift from longtime Penn State supporters Richard K. and Sharon Struthers, construction began in the fall on The Struthers Family Career Services Center at the campus. The center will offer both current students and job-changing graduates in the region a comprehensive range of resources. Going beyond traditional services such as resume workshops and career fairs, the center also will provide state-of-the-art technology for video interviews and online job searches.

$1 million pledge jump-starts Wilkes-Barre Career Services Center

Plans are under way for a new Career Services Center at Penn State Wilkes-Barre that will provide students with comprehensive career planning and job seeking services. A major matching gift from Wilkes-Barre alumnus Richard K. "Ric" Struthers and his wife, Sharon, has jump-started the campus' fundraising effort to support the project.

The Struthers have pledged $1 million to Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Their gift will match 50 percent of the cost to build and furnish the new Career Services Center, up to a total commitment of $500,000. The remainder of their commitment will be split with $250,000 going to create the Struthers Family Trustee Scholarship supporting students at Penn State Wilkes-Barre with need. The additional $250,000 will go into an endowment by the Struthers Family, annually supporting the operational expenses of the new Career Services Center.

Honor society students give almost 1,000 pounds of goods to soldiers

Members of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Honor Society have completed their second drive for troops serving overseas. The local honor students recently delivered nearly a thousand pounds of goods ranging from personal grooming products to microwave popcorn, instant hot chocolate, powdered drinks, stationery and envelopes and other items to Give2theTroops in Fairfield, Conn.

DeGraba wins Irene Thomas Memorial Award

Gianna DeGraba, a sophomore at Penn State Wilkes-Barre from Dallas Pa., was the recent recipient of the Irene Thomas Memorial Award. This award is sponsored by Arts at Hayfield -- a nonprofit, community-arts support organization housed on campus -- and is given to an academically accomplished student who has demonstrated commitment to the arts.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre scholarship donors and recipients honored

On Thursday, Oct. 13, Penn State Wilkes-Barre honored 106 students who were awarded scholarships for the 2011-12 school year at the annual Scholarship Dinner held at Appletree Terrace. This year, Penn State Wilkes-Barre awarded 265 students approximately $730,000 in scholarships.
