Energy business and finance major offers new energy and land management option

Beginning in the fall of 2013, the Penn State John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME) will be offering a new energy and land management option as part of the bachelor of science degree in energy business and finance (EBF). Designed in consultation with the American Association of Professional Landmen, this new option will provide expertise in the acquisition of sub-surface exploration rights and enable Penn State students to seek challenging careers as exploration Landmen.

Penn State professor finding new ways to repair nerve injuries

Nerve injury is a major health problem, with 12,000 new injuries occurring in the U.S. each year. Recovery can be difficult or impossible, which is why Dr. Mohammad Reza Abidian—a Penn State assistant professor of bioengineering, materials science and engineering—is focusing his research on special materials called “conducting polymers,” which could one day offer a solution to these injuries.

When the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts takes place this year from July 11 to 14, it will kick off with a new honor -- as the fifth-best summer festival in the nation, according to livability.com's rankings. The festival, held in the Borough of State College and on Penn State's University Park campus, brings more than 125,000 visitors to the area each year.

Penn State ranks in the top 50 in eight subject areas in the recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject. Out of 30 subjects evaluated, Penn State ranks among the top 200 institutions in 29 subjects, placing the University in the top tier of institutions.

Student organization hones consulting skills for nonprofit clients

Nonprofit organization ACES North America was presented with a new marketing campaign recently thanks to some consulting from a Penn State Smeal College of Business student group. Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations (SCNO), a group that provides free consulting to local nonprofit organizations, also worked with the Children’s Aid Society and the Child Protection and Safety Collaboration.

Students' diet and physical activity improve with parent communications

College students eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise more on days when they communicate more with their parents, according to researchers at Penn State.

"Only a third of college students consumes a diet that is consistent with national recommendations," said Meg Small, research associate in the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development.

West III, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, has played a key behind-the-scenes role as a consultant to the director and cast of the upcoming Warner Brothers film "The Great Gatsby." West is general editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and published Trimalchio: An Early Version of "The Great Gatsby" in 2000.

Penn State World Campus student is first Navy scholarship recipient

For five years, Justin Scinocco was a Navy special warfare combatant-craft crewman (SWCC), a member of an elite team that supports Navy SEALS. He served in Iraq in 2003. In 2011, he enrolled in Penn State's World Campus to prepare for a medical career. For his Navy service and academic achievements, Scinocco has been chosen to receive the first Alexander P. Fletcher Navy Student Award presented by the World Campus.

Millennium Science Complex nears finish, readies for advanced research

Rising up along Pollock Road between Shortlidge and Bigler roads on Penn State's University Park campus, the 297,000-square-foot Millennium Science Complex is impressive for its size alone. But what is truly remarkable about the new building is in the details. "Every aspect of this building has been very thoughtfully designed in great detail, from the highly sensitive research labs to the configuration of the plants on a green roof," said Gordon Turow, director of campus planning and design. "It's very impressive that a building of this size could so successfully address such a huge range of complex design details." Contractors are putting the finishing touches on those details as the building -- the new home for the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and Materials Research Institute -- nears completion. Most construction work was finished by the end of July, and the University expects soon to receive an occupancy permit from the Department of Labor and Industry verifying it has been built to code.

New process cleanly extracts oil from tar sands and fouled beaches

A new, more environmentally friendly method of separating oil from tar sands has been developed by a team of researchers at Penn State. This method, which utilizes ionic liquids to separate the heavy viscous oil from sand, also is capable of cleaning oil spills from beaches and separating oil from drill cuttings, the solid particles that must be removed from drilling fluids in oil and gas wells.
