'It's Your Time: Find Your Future' to air July 11 on Big Ten Network

College students and recent graduates preparing to enter the most challenging job market in decades, take heart. A new Big Ten Network series produced by Penn State called "It's Your Time: Find Your Future" is bringing you information, resources and guidance. The half-hour pilot episode, hosted by Marie Hardin, is scheduled to debut at 7 p.m. Eastern time Sunday, July 11, on the Big Ten Network.

The Medical Minute: Arthritis in children

Many people do not realize that arthritis affects children of all ages. Juvenile Arthritis causes pain, stiffness and inflammation of one or more joints in children 16 years of age or less. Nearly 300,000 children in the United States are affected by some type of Juvenile Arthritis. To educate the public more about rheumatic illnesses in children, July has been declared National Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month.

Penn State Shenango announces continuing education programs for July

Penn State Shenango's Department of Continuing Education will hold two July programs, including a teen summer science camp and an introductory course on herbs. The "Not Your Average Science Camp," which includes a week of fun, exciting workshops focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on July 19 to 23, in Chadderton Laboratory located behind the Sharon Post Office on Shenango Avenue. Also, an introduction to herbs course will be presented by the Penn State Master Gardeners from noon to 1:15 p.m. on July 20.

The Medical Minute: Practice fireworks safety this Independence Day

Independence Day celebrations almost always include fireworks of some kind. The Prevent Blindness America organization recommends attending professionally organized fireworks displays rather than buying and setting off your own. This view is echoed by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which collects and reports data on fireworks-related injuries every year. They report that 7,000 emergency room visits from fireworks-related injuries occurred during 2008, including seven deaths. In 2007, there were 11 deaths and 9,800 emergency room visits from fireworks-related injury.

Shenango honors its outstanding students

Penn State Shenango recently held its 2010 Honors Convocation and Recognition Banquet to recognize students' outstanding academic and student life achievements and services. This year's winners of the Eric and Josephine Walker Award, the Dennis W. Bartholomew Outstanding Adult Student Award, and the Ann Wansack Award, were included in the announcements.

Meteorologist's weather technology aids soldiers, civilians

From battlefields to civilian settings, David Stauffer's combination of weather and technology saves lives. Stauffer, a senior research associate and associate professor of meteorology at Penn State, and his research team helped develop the Meteorological Measuring Set - Profiler (MMS-P). The Profiler is an automated computerized weather forecast system that runs in the back of specially equipped Humvees to provide detailed "nowcast" information to the Army. Another version has been used to predict the spread of hazards in the air during major events such as Super Bowls and the Olympics.

Students in every major can benefit from studying abroad

As a kid growing up in rural Pennsylvania, Michelle Toumayants often found herself exploring new countries, new cultures and a new way of thinking, all without leaving home. The Penn State comparative literature doctoral student describes Everett, Pa., as typical small town: homogeneous, everyone knows everyone, hard to find on a map. As a kid, she wanted to escape and see the world, and she did it by absorbing all the books she could find. Today, Toumayants is actually seeing the world, taking every opportunity she can find to travel, including study-abroad programs.

Video: Researcher studies warming oceans' effects on coral reef life

Iliana Baums, an assistant professor of biology at Penn State, dons scuba gear for work. She studies coral reef ecosystems, the "forests of the oceans," diverse habitats that are vital to many species of ocean life. Warming ocean temperatures disrupt that ecosystem and cause episodes of coral bleaching, which, over time, can kill coral and the life supported by it. Watch a video as Baums explains her research conducted under the sea.

'Expert Opinion' Monday shows take on athlete management, officiating

Two new episodes of the Big Ten Network's "Expert Opinion with Graham Spanier" debuting on June 21 and June 28 take on popular sports-talk topics on the big screen and during game-day debates. The "Athlete Management and Representation" edition of "Expert Opinion" is scheduled to begin airing at noon Eastern time on Monday, June 21 and "Inside the World of Officiating" is scheduled to air at noon Eastern time on Monday, June 28.

The Medical Minute: I.Q. -- interact and question

"First do no harm" is an oath taken by all physicians, but despite this aspiration, the Institute of Medicine estimates that 44,000-98,000 patients die each year due to medical errors. Sixty percent are due to ineffective communication, and the lion's share of these miscommunications occurs at the time patients' care is transferred between providers. In response to these safety concerns, to foster inter-provider communication and a culture of interaction, the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal 02.05.01 requires "Implementation of a standardized approach to 'handoff' communications, including an opportunity to ask and respond to questions."

Shenango alumnus is honored with Penn State Alumni Achievement Award

Edward A. Faylo, a 2002 Penn State alumnus, was honored with the 2010 Penn State Alumni Achievement Award by the Penn State Alumni Association. He is the first Penn State Shenango alumnus to receive this prestigious University-wide award which is represented by a cast bronze medallion and framed certificate.

Harris scholarship established at Penn State Shenango

Students at Penn State Shenango will benefit this fall from the establishment of the David and Betty Harris Trustee Scholarship which was created by the Harrises to help support students who are in financial need and reside in the Shenango Valley. "My wife and I think a lot about how blessed we are," stated Penn State alumnus David Harris. "I wouldn't have attended college, at least right out of high school, if the Penn State Shenango Valley Campus hadn't been there. Because of what the poor and working class people face today in trying to obtain a quality education without being burdened with unreasonable debt, my wife and I wanted to do our part, however small, to allow one or two people to have the same opportunity we enjoyed for a sound beginning."

Campaign for Penn State will have major impact on local campus

With more than $1 billion raised to date, Penn State has entered the public phase of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students, with a goal that will make it the biggest fundraising effort in the University's history. President Graham Spanier recently announced that Penn State will aim to secure $2 billion by 2014 to ensure that the University can continue to offer an outstanding education to students from every economic background while benefiting the public through research and service. Penn State campus locations across the Commonwealth are involved in the campaign and have established individual dollar goals within the campaign framework that reflect their most critical needs. Penn State Shenango will enter its public phase of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students with more than $1,300,000 raised -- over 46 percent of its total goal of $3 million.

12th annual Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Golf Outing to be held in June

Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its 12th annual Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 15, at the Hickory VFW Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. Each golfer will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win golf for four at the Penn State Blue and White Course, including a night stay at one of Penn State’s lodging establishments at University Park. Proceeds from the event benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships and special projects. Only the first 36 paid teams will be included. Deadline to register is May 31. Shenango to particpate in World Book Night

Penn State Shenango will participate in World Book Night from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in the Lartz Memorial Library located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Shenango librarian to speak on supporting LGBT students in higher education

Penn State Shenango will conclude its 2012-13 Faculty Lecture Series with a lecture by Matthew P. Ciszek, assistant librarian and head of the Lartz Memorial Library, who will speak on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students in higher education at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22. His lecture titled “The Rainbow Connection” will take place in Sharon Hall, Room 105, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

The Technology Council of Northwest PA will host a workshop titled "Cyber Security for Everyman" at Penn State Shenango via video conference from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in its Lecture Hall, Room 321. The event is free to all Technology Council of NWPA members, as well at Penn State students, faculty and staff. Community members are invited to attend the workshop for a fee of $15 — checks should be made payable to the Technology Council of Northwest PA.

Earth Fest 2013 to feature live music, kids’ activities, artists’ market

Adults and children of all ages are invited to join the fun as Penn State Shenango holds Earth Fest 2013 from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music and entertainment, children’s activities, the Farm Bureau Mobile Agriculture Science Lab, an artists’ market, Penn State Berkey Ice Cream, green information from local organizations and businesses, a recycling event, and eco-friendly cars from Montrose Auto Group and Mel Grata Scion. Food will be available to purchase.

Shenango OT Club to collect, package items for veterans

From now through March 20, Penn State Shenango’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Club will be holding a collection drive of personal items to be included in care packages for veterans in Erie, Pa. Collection boxes are located in the Great Hall of the Sharon Hall building on Penn Avenue and in the Lartz Memorial Library on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following its collection drive, the OT Club will be putting together and delivering packages to veterans at the Erie VA Medical Center during its class field trip April 5.

Penn State Shenango's auditorium was filled to capacity Feb. 13 at the Friends of Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Dinner featuring guest speaker Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien spoke about Penn State football, his dedicated players and the respect he has for the University. His humble yet inspiring words were highly received by Penn State alumni and friends. Athletic Director Dave Joyner and Alumni Relations Executive Director Roger Williams, who were part of the program, also gave motivating remarks to the crowd.

Community invited to campus book sale, raffle to benefit United Way

Penn State Shenango will hold a community book sale and basket raffle from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the McDowell Hall Community Room located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa., to benefit the Mercer County United Way.

Hundreds of gently used books, as well as some CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles, will be available in prices from 50 cents to $2.

O'Brien to speak at Shenango Alumni Society fundraising dinner

Penn State football coach and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Bill O'Brien will be this year's guest speaker at the Penn State Shenango Friends of Penn State 2013 Annual Dinner on Feb. 13. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets are $50 per person (cash bar will be available). The event is sponsored by the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society. Proceeds will go to Penn State Shenango student scholarships and Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. To call O'Brien's first year as a head coach "great" would be a vast understatement.

Named the Nittany Lions' 15th head football coach on Jan. 6, 2012, O'Brien quickly and effectively established the foundation and shared his passionate vision for the new era of Penn State football during his initial eight months on the job.

Students volunteer time to honor Martin Luther King

Penn State Beaver students, along with those from other campuses, celebrated A Day On, Not a Day Off by volunteering their day away from the classroom to work in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 21. Fifty students from Beaver, Penn State DuBois, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Shenango worked for organizations in DuBois while other students worked locally in Beaver County. The campuses annually join forces to work in communities in observance of the holiday.
