Auditions for rock musical 'Godspell' announced

Penn State Shenango's Drama Club, in cooperation with First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, announces auditions for "Godspell," a rock musical based on the Gospel of Matthew and written by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. Anyone with talent in singing, acting, improvisation and/or dancing -- especially a combination of one or more -- is welcome to audition from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Shenango campus auditorium (across from the Sharon Post Office). Auditions will conclude from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan.16, at First Presbyterian Church, 600 East State Street, Sharon.

Penn State assistant coach Tom Bradley to speak at Shenango dinner

Tom Bradley, assistant coach of the Nittany Lion football team, will be the guest speaker at this year's Friends of Penn State Shenango Dinner, to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, in the campus' auditorium. The Penn State Shenango Alumni Society welcomes all community members to attend. Doors open at 5:45; beverages and hors d'ouvres will be available at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30. Tickets cost $40, and proceeds will benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships.

Papadimas was director of Shenango Learning Center

Julie Papadimas, senior instructor in English and director of the Learning Center at Penn State Shenango, retired in June. Papadimas was began her career at Penn State in 1982 as a lecturer in English and as a writing tutor. In 1986, following a faculty search, she was hired as a full-time instructor and, over the next several years, taught additional courses including women writers and American studies.

'Penn State's Got Talent' to be presented Nov. 6

Want the recipe for an evening of great entertainment? How about a double measure of country music; leaven it with some cool, bluesy jazz numbers; season it with a mix of pop, rock and a dash of death metal? Garnish the result with short comedy sketches, and a splash of surprise. The result is "Penn State's Got Talent," sponsored by the Penn State Shenango Drama Club, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, in the Penn State Auditorium on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

Penn State Day designed for high school juniors and seniors

Penn State Shenango will hold its annual Penn State Day at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the Great Hall of Sharon Hall on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. The open house is designed for high school juniors and seniors who are considering any Penn State campus. Participants will hear about the admissions process, learn about the academic options available at Penn State, and receive scholarship information and a tour of the Shenango campus. Shenango faculty and staff to participate in local service project

Penn State Shenango faculty and staff will participate in a campus service project to benefit the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County on Wednesday, Sept. 15, during the Mercer County Band Night at Hickory High School. All patrons of the Mercer County Band Night are asked to bring a canned good or non-perishable food item as a donation. Good will food items will be accepted from 6 to 8 p.m. at the entrances of the football field. Penn State Shenango volunteers will collect donations, pack boxes and load the Community Food Warehouse's truck. For more information call Karen Zoccole at 724-983-2806.

Jamestown High School graduate receives Sharonsteel Scholar Award

Sabrina Donner is the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Sharonsteel Scholar award, a four-year, full-tuition grant to Penn State funded by the Sharonsteel Foundation. The award, presented by Sharonsteel Trust Administrator Lori Darby, marks the fifteenth year that an incoming Penn State Shenango freshman student has been presented with this honor.

Fall Pumpkin Festival to include rides, games, food vendors and more

Penn State Shenango will host a Fall Pumpkin Festival on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17; 1 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18; and 1 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19; featuring rides, games and food vendors from Premium Events out of Masury, Ohio. Pre-sale ride tickets are available at the campus in Sharon Hall room 103 for $15. The event is being sponsored by the campus' Student Government Association (SGA), and proceeds will support the organization's programs.

Penn State receives more than $129 million to lead energy team

Penn State researchers will receive $129 million over the next five years from several federal sources, including the Department of Energy, and an additional $30 million from Pennsylvania to develop ways to make buildings more energy efficient. The funds will create an Energy Innovation Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, which will involve a substantial number of researchers from academe, the private sector and two national laboratories in a concerted effort to save energy, cut carbon pollution and position the United States at the forefront of the industry.

University continues emergency response work at campuses

With the scope of campus safety and security becoming more complex across the nation, Penn State undertook an analysis of 21 of its 24 campuses to assess each location's emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Penn State's 19 Commonwealth campuses as well as the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pa., and the Great Valley campus are all part of the University's ongoing examination of emergency operations.

Assistant professor of criminal justice joins regional campuses

Mari B. Pierce has joined Penn State as assistant professor of criminal justice. She has been hired to teach in the new administration of justice baccalaureate program that will be delivered jointly by Penn State Beaver, New Kensington, and Shenango campuses. All required courses will be offered at each campus, although students should expect to take some courses via interactive video and/or the Web.

The Medical Minute: The worry with warts

Common warts are harmless skin lesions that are usually found on the hands or soles of the feet, the latter referred to as plantar warts. Warts have a fleshy and hard feel to them, can be associated with skin thickening, and often are described as having a cauliflower-like appearance. Warts, especially plantar warts and those developing near fingernails are sometimes painful. Plantar warts are also slow to spontaneously heal and can be more difficult to treat.

Penn State Shenango faculty honored for excellence in teaching

Penn State Shenango has announced the recipients of its full- and part-time teaching awards. Tim Brundrett, instructor in sociology, was awarded the 2010 Leonard R. Riforgiato Memorial Teaching Award, while Jack Skinner, part-time instructor in mathematics, received the 2010 Margaret Cunningham Foley Memorial Teaching Award.

Big Ten Network's 'Global Penn State' showcases service learning

College students who have studied overseas often return home finding that their experiences transformed them. Many Penn State students' global education focuses on service-learning projects in developing nations. The results of their extended visits have transformed entire villages with improved quality of life. A Big Ten Network series premiering in July highlights several of these dual-benefit service-learning opportunities. "Global Penn State" debuts at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 25, on the Big Ten Network.

12th annual Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Golf Outing to be held in June

Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its 12th annual Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 15, at the Hickory VFW Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. Each golfer will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win golf for four at the Penn State Blue and White Course, including a night stay at one of Penn State’s lodging establishments at University Park. Proceeds from the event benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships and special projects. Only the first 36 paid teams will be included. Deadline to register is May 31. Shenango to particpate in World Book Night

Penn State Shenango will participate in World Book Night from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in the Lartz Memorial Library located in downtown Sharon, Pa. This year’s book, "Middle School: The Worse Years of My Life" by James Patterson, will be free to the public on a first come, first served basis; quantities are limited. Shenango librarian to speak on supporting LGBT students in higher education

Penn State Shenango will conclude its 2012-13 Faculty Lecture Series with a lecture by Matthew P. Ciszek, assistant librarian and head of the Lartz Memorial Library, who will speak on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students in higher education at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22. His lecture titled “The Rainbow Connection” will take place in Sharon Hall, Room 105, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

Penn State Shenango to offer ‘Cyber Security for Everyman’ workshop

The Technology Council of Northwest PA will host a workshop titled "Cyber Security for Everyman" at Penn State Shenango via video conference from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in its Lecture Hall, Room 321. The event is free to all Technology Council of NWPA members, as well at Penn State students, faculty and staff. Community members are invited to attend the workshop for a fee of $15 — checks should be made payable to the Technology Council of Northwest PA.

Earth Fest 2013 to feature live music, kids’ activities, artists’ market

Adults and children of all ages are invited to join the fun as Penn State Shenango holds Earth Fest 2013 from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music and entertainment, children’s activities, the Farm Bureau Mobile Agriculture Science Lab, an artists’ market, Penn State Berkey Ice Cream, green information from local organizations and businesses, a recycling event, and eco-friendly cars from Montrose Auto Group and Mel Grata Scion. Food will be available to purchase.

Shenango OT Club to collect, package items for veterans

From now through March 20, Penn State Shenango’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Club will be holding a collection drive of personal items to be included in care packages for veterans in Erie, Pa. Collection boxes are located in the Great Hall of the Sharon Hall building on Penn Avenue and in the Lartz Memorial Library on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following its collection drive, the OT Club will be putting together and delivering packages to veterans at the Erie VA Medical Center during its class field trip April 5.

Penn State Shenango's auditorium was filled to capacity Feb. 13 at the Friends of Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Dinner featuring guest speaker Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien spoke about Penn State football, his dedicated players and the respect he has for the University. His humble yet inspiring words were highly received by Penn State alumni and friends. Athletic Director Dave Joyner and Alumni Relations Executive Director Roger Williams, who were part of the program, also gave motivating remarks to the crowd.

Community invited to campus book sale, raffle to benefit United Way

Penn State Shenango will hold a community book sale and basket raffle from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the McDowell Hall Community Room located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa., to benefit the Mercer County United Way.

Hundreds of gently used books, as well as some CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles, will be available in prices from 50 cents to $2.

Penn State football coach and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Bill O'Brien will be this year's guest speaker at the Penn State Shenango Friends of Penn State 2013 Annual Dinner on Feb. 13. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets are $50 per person (cash bar will be available). The event is sponsored by the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society. Proceeds will go to Penn State Shenango student scholarships and Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. To call O'Brien's first year as a head coach "great" would be a vast understatement.

Named the Nittany Lions' 15th head football coach on Jan. 6, 2012, O'Brien quickly and effectively established the foundation and shared his passionate vision for the new era of Penn State football during his initial eight months on the job.

Students volunteer time to honor Martin Luther King

Penn State Beaver students, along with those from other campuses, celebrated A Day On, Not a Day Off by volunteering their day away from the classroom to work in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 21. Fifty students from Beaver, Penn State DuBois, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Shenango worked for organizations in DuBois while other students worked locally in Beaver County. The campuses annually join forces to work in communities in observance of the holiday.
