Updated edition of nursing informatics book published

The Second edition of "Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge" has been published by Jones and Bartlett Learning. The book, written and edited by Dee McGonigle and Kathleen Mastrian, is completely updated with new chapters, cutting-edge scenarios, and projections for the future.

Laureate to explore Ernest Hemingway's art during first campus visits

Penn State Laureate Linda Patterson Miller, professor of English at Penn State Abington, will begin her journeys into western Pennsylvania, serving as a "laureate-in-residence" as she interacts with the campus communities at Penn State DuBois (Sept. 13); Penn State Erie, The Behrend College (Sept. 14); Penn State Shenango (Sept. 15); and Penn State Beaver (Sept. 16). Miller will be participating in individual classes and symposiums along with engaging larger audiences in public forums at these locations. "I invite anyone in these geographical areas to join with us for these public presentation as we variously explore the art of American diary-keeping, the lives and art of the 1920s Lost Generation, and the art of Ernest Hemingway as discovered in his letters and early prose," said Miller.

Fall Pumpkin Festival to be held Sept. 16-18 at Penn State Shenango

Penn State Shenango will hold the second annual Fall Pumpkin Festival from Sept. 16-18. The festival, geared toward children and adults, will take place on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. The three-day event will feature rides, games, food vendors and live bands each night. Pre-sale ride ticket wrist bands are available at the campus in Sharon Hall, Room 103, for only $12 (the regular price is $15). General admission is free. The festival is sponsored by the campus' Student Government Association (SGA), FOX Youngstown, and WKBN 27 First News; proceeds will support the SGA and other Shenango campus clubs' programs and events.

Student club donates to medical equipment recycling program

The UPMC Horizon Medical Equipment Recycling Program (MERP) recently received a check for $1,200 from Penn State Shenango's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Club. The donation comes from profits earned by the PTA Club at its 2010 and 2011 Hustle for Muscle 5-kilometer run/walk event, held on campus in downtown Sharon, Pa. A portion of the event's proceeds supports a local nonprofit chosen by the club while the other portion supports the club's programs.

Faculty honored for excellence in teaching at Shenango

Penn State Shenango recently announced the recipients of its full- and part-time teaching awards. Missa Eaton, assistant professor of psychology, was awarded the 2011 Leonard R. Riforgiato Memorial Teaching Award, while Jeanne Zingale, part-time instructor in theatre, received the 2011 Margaret Cunningham Foley Memorial Teaching Award. Both faculty members were presented with a plaque and a monetary award at this year's Penn State Shenango Advisory Board dinner.

Shenango students recognized for outstanding achievements

Students of Penn State Shenango were honored at the campus' 2011 Honors Convocation and Recognition Banquet for their outstanding academic and student life achievements and services. The recipients of this year's Eric and Josephine Walker Award, Dennis W. Bartholomew Outstanding Adult Student Award, and Ann Wansack Award were included in the ceremony.

Shenango students tie for first place in business simulation game

Three Penn State Shenango business students finished in a worldwide tie for first place over a 10-week period for their overall company performance as they competed in a business simulation computer game titled GLO-BUS (Global Business). The students are Brandon Hall of Hubbard, Ohio; Christopher Morgan of Transfer, Pa.; and Chad Webster of West Middlesex, Pa.

Three special, belated Mother's Day gifts: diplomas for sons and Mom

Denise Malovich is one of more than 12,500 Penn State students University-wide graduating this spring, but she never imagined she would be joining her two sons in picking up diplomas at Penn State Shenango. They began their bachelor's degree studies at the campus at different times, but will all graduate on May 13. "I'm thrilled to be graduating," said Denise, 50, of Sharpsville, Pa. "I always wanted to go back and get a business degree." The three Malovichs will be among the 70 students graduating at Shenango campus, which includes four students from other Penn State campuses.

Pittsburgh Pirates home game June 3 vs. Phillies benefits THON

Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates will donate a portion of proceeds from ticket sales to Penn State's Dance Marathon during "Penn State Night benefiting THON" on Friday, June 3, at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. The game against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies starts at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.pirates.com/pennstate online or by calling 412-325-4928. Penn State Shenango student group plans E-Cycling Day on April 29

The community is invited to participate in a spring E-Cycling Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 29, sponsored by Penn State Shenango's Information Sciences and Technology department, Starkey's Computer and Electronics and the Technology Council of Northwest Pennsylvania. The free event, which is limited to e-cycling of personal computers and cellular phones less than 10 years-old, will be held in the parking lot located on the corner of Silver Street and Penn Avenue next to Penn State's Sharon Hall building. Old-style "cathode ray tube" computer monitors will be accepted for a $25 fee.

The Best of Circurious comes to Penn State Shenango auditorium

The Best of Circurious -- a group of heart-stopping, mind-boggling artists and athletes -- will perform at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 15, in the Penn State Shenango auditorium located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Penn State Shenango club to hold 5K run/walk

Penn State Shenango's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Club will hold its second annual Hustle for Muscle 5K run/walk event at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, to raise funds for its club and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Horizon Foundation's local Medical Equipment Recycling Program. The event will be held on a family-friendly fast course around the Shenango campus in downtown Sharon. The race will start and end at Forker Laboratory on Shenango Avenue. Following the race, refreshments will be provided and awards will be presented to the top three men and women finishers in various age groups.

Shenango campus Learning Center director retires

Julie Papadimas, senior instructor in English and director of the Learning Center, retired from Penn State Shenango this past summer. "As founder and decades-long director of the Learning Center, Julie Papadimas played a key role in the academic success of countless students," said Chancellor Fred Leeds. "As a faculty member in English, she brought her passion for correct usage, popular culture, and literature to the classroom. Her impact was profound, and the campus community is grateful for her outstanding work."

12th annual Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Golf Outing to be held in June

Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its 12th annual Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 15, at the Hickory VFW Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. Each golfer will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win golf for four at the Penn State Blue and White Course, including a night stay at one of Penn State’s lodging establishments at University Park. Proceeds from the event benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships and special projects. Only the first 36 paid teams will be included. Deadline to register is May 31. Shenango to particpate in World Book Night

Penn State Shenango will participate in World Book Night from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in the Lartz Memorial Library located in downtown Sharon, Pa. This year’s book, "Middle School: The Worse Years of My Life" by James Patterson, will be free to the public on a first come, first served basis; quantities are limited. Shenango librarian to speak on supporting LGBT students in higher education

Penn State Shenango will conclude its 2012-13 Faculty Lecture Series with a lecture by Matthew P. Ciszek, assistant librarian and head of the Lartz Memorial Library, who will speak on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students in higher education at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22. His lecture titled “The Rainbow Connection” will take place in Sharon Hall, Room 105, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

The Technology Council of Northwest PA will host a workshop titled "Cyber Security for Everyman" at Penn State Shenango via video conference from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in its Lecture Hall, Room 321. The event is free to all Technology Council of NWPA members, as well at Penn State students, faculty and staff. Community members are invited to attend the workshop for a fee of $15 — checks should be made payable to the Technology Council of Northwest PA.

Earth Fest 2013 to feature live music, kids’ activities, artists’ market

Adults and children of all ages are invited to join the fun as Penn State Shenango holds Earth Fest 2013 from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music and entertainment, children’s activities, the Farm Bureau Mobile Agriculture Science Lab, an artists’ market, Penn State Berkey Ice Cream, green information from local organizations and businesses, a recycling event, and eco-friendly cars from Montrose Auto Group and Mel Grata Scion. Food will be available to purchase.

Shenango OT Club to collect, package items for veterans

From now through March 20, Penn State Shenango’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Club will be holding a collection drive of personal items to be included in care packages for veterans in Erie, Pa. Collection boxes are located in the Great Hall of the Sharon Hall building on Penn Avenue and in the Lartz Memorial Library on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following its collection drive, the OT Club will be putting together and delivering packages to veterans at the Erie VA Medical Center during its class field trip April 5.

Penn State Shenango's auditorium was filled to capacity Feb. 13 at the Friends of Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Dinner featuring guest speaker Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien spoke about Penn State football, his dedicated players and the respect he has for the University. His humble yet inspiring words were highly received by Penn State alumni and friends. Athletic Director Dave Joyner and Alumni Relations Executive Director Roger Williams, who were part of the program, also gave motivating remarks to the crowd.

Community invited to campus book sale, raffle to benefit United Way

Penn State Shenango will hold a community book sale and basket raffle from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the McDowell Hall Community Room located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa., to benefit the Mercer County United Way.

Hundreds of gently used books, as well as some CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles, will be available in prices from 50 cents to $2.

O'Brien to speak at Shenango Alumni Society fundraising dinner

Penn State football coach and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Bill O'Brien will be this year's guest speaker at the Penn State Shenango Friends of Penn State 2013 Annual Dinner on Feb. 13. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets are $50 per person (cash bar will be available). The event is sponsored by the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society. Proceeds will go to Penn State Shenango student scholarships and Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. To call O'Brien's first year as a head coach "great" would be a vast understatement.

Named the Nittany Lions' 15th head football coach on Jan. 6, 2012, O'Brien quickly and effectively established the foundation and shared his passionate vision for the new era of Penn State football during his initial eight months on the job.

Students volunteer time to honor Martin Luther King

Penn State Beaver students, along with those from other campuses, celebrated A Day On, Not a Day Off by volunteering their day away from the classroom to work in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 21. Fifty students from Beaver, Penn State DuBois, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Shenango worked for organizations in DuBois while other students worked locally in Beaver County. The campuses annually join forces to work in communities in observance of the holiday.
