Shenango drama club production to benefit local organizations

The Penn State Shenango Drama Club announces its production of "Trifles," and Other Important Things as a benefit for AWARE of Mercer County and the Community Food Warehouse. The show features three, one-act plays -- "Trifles," "Post-Its" and "Chocolate" -- on a variety of themes, each of which reveals in its own way the importance of life's little details. "'Trifles' and Other Important Things" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on April 13 and 14, in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium in downtown Sharon, Pa. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens, with $1 off admission with a nonperishable item for the Community Food Warehouse. A 50/50 raffle and basket raffle will also be held to benefit AWARE and the Community Food Warehouse. Free grant-writing workshop for nonprofits to be held April 4

Nonprofit organizations interested in improving their grant writing skills are invited to a free workshop at Penn State Shenango in downtown Sharon, Pa., from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, in Sharon Hall room 105.

"Grants 101" will combine tips on successful proposal writing with a mock proposal review session. Those who are interested in seeking grants should come to the workshop with an identified potential funding agency and a draft proposal, along with the proposal guidelines. The first portion of the workshop will cover elements of successful proposals followed by a constructive critique of the participants' draft proposal.

Spring break travelers reminded to take precautions for safety

A spring break travel alert for Mexico has been issued by the U.S. Department of State for U.S. citizens traveling to that country. Individuals who may be traveling during spring break to any locale are urged to use common sense precautions. University Police offers some general tips and links for more information about traveling abroad.

Career Services continues workshop series for students and alumni

Penn State Shenango Career Services will continue its series of workshops for current students and Penn State alumni when it offers a session titled "Winning Interview Skills" from 12:15 to 1 p.m. or 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Sharon Hall, Room 105. The workshop will teach participants skills for preparing for a positive interview experience.

Penn State Shenango Drama Club announces two spring productions

Penn State Shenango Drama Club has announced two productions this spring: a staged reading of Emily Mann's "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years" will be given at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, as a benefit for the Community Food Warehouse. Later, on April 13 and 14, a series of one-acts will be offered each evening under the theme: "Trifles and Other Important Things." All events will take place in the Penn State Shenango auditorium, located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets for "Having Our Say" are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, with $1 off any regular admission with the donation of a nonperishable item for the Community Food Warehouse.

Penn State Shenango to show live coverage of Paterno memorial service

Penn State Shenango will be showing the live coverage of Joe Paterno's memorial service, "A Memorial For Joe," in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. The community is invited to attend. The memorial service is being held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Those who are unable to attend can watch live coverage on the Big Ten Network, at BTN.com and BTN2Go.

Joyner to speak at Friends of Penn State Annual Dinner

The Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its Friends of Penn State Annual Dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the campus' auditorium. Community members are invited to attend and hear this year's guest speaker, Acting Director of Athletics David Joyner. Hors d'ouvres will be available at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:45 p.m.). The ticket price is $40, and proceeds from the event will benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships.

Shenango presents series returns to Penn State with Viva Voce!

The community is invited to a free concert as the local Penn State campus hosts Viva Voce! for the return of its "Shenango Presents" series at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, in the Penn State Shenango auditorium located in downtown Sharon. Viva Voce! specializes in solo, duo, trio, and quartet music from various eras and in different genres. The evening's program will feature several Anthems of Creation, written by Shenango campus music instructor and New Castle native Ferruccio Germani, and six Liebeslieder Walzer by Brahms.

Shenango campus supports community during the holidays

The Penn State Shenango family has been actively involved in efforts to make the community's holidays brighter. From collecting mittens and gloves during this year's Hermitage Light Up Parade, to collecting toys for the local Toys for Tots program, to gathering food and donating money to the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County, the Shenango campus community always is reaching out to those who are in need.

Fall commencement to be held Friday, Dec. 16

Penn State Shenango will hold its fall commencement ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, in the Shenango campus auditorium with a reception immediately following. Fred Leeds, Shenango campus chancellor, will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees on 61 graduating students. This year, Shenango campus welcomes Pennsylvania State Rep. Mark Longietti, of the 7th Legislative District in Mercer County, as its guest speaker.

Penn State Shenango held vigil for victims of child abuse Nov. 29

In light of the recent events at Penn State, the Shenango campus welcomed the community to a public vigil in support of victims of child abuse on Tuesday, Nov. 29 in the campus' auditorium, located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following the vigil, a reception was held in the Great Hall.

The event will include a presentation on child abuse and its impact on victims. Available resources and various strategies for supporting a loved one's healing process also will be discussed. William McGuigan, associate professor of human development and family studies at the Shenango campus, and Nikki Cadman from AWARE, will be the keynote speakers.

A collection for new and gently used toys for the children who are staying in AWARE shelters will be held.

Shenango to present 'Music and Misunderstandings'

"Music and Misunderstandings," Penn State Shenango's third annual Talent Show, promises to be the best yet. Acts range from a professional singer/songwriter to a stand-up comic to a polished player of an Australian didgeridoo. There is something for everyone in this show to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 12 in the Penn State Auditorium, located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Anyone bringing a nonperishable food item for the Community Food Warehouse will receive a $1 discount off their ticket price, which is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. A portion of the profits from the evening's 50/50 and basket raffles also will go to benefit the Community Food Warehouse.

Sharon High graduate receives 16th Sharonsteel Scholar Award

For the past 16 years, a Penn State Shenango freshman has been the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition grant to Penn State funded by the Sharonsteel Foundation. This year, Nicholas Taylor of Sharon, Pa., was presented with this grant by Sharonsteel Trust Administrator Lori Darby. The Sharonsteel Foundation has contributed more than a half million dollars to the Sharonsteel Scholars program at Penn State Shenango.

Campus requests Occupational Therapy Assistant Program accreditation

Penn State Shenango has applied to the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) for permission to develop an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program. In January 2012 ACOTE will let the campus know if their application is approved. Once Developing Program Status is granted, Penn State Shenango will be allowed to admit students for fall 2012. Students interested in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program should contact the Penn State Shenango Admissions Office directly at 724-983-2803.

$3.2 million in grants to aid students in 7 Pa. school districts

Penn State's Talent Search program, administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity, has received more than $3.2 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The program, which serves more than 1,550 Pennsylvania students in sixth to 12th grade each year, seeks to increase the number of low-income and first-generation college students.

Funding was received in the form of two five-year grants, both of which will run from Sept. 1, 2011, to Aug. 31, 2016. The first program, totaling $2.1 million, will work with students in the Aliquippa, Clairton, Farrell, New Castle, New Kensington-Arnold and Sharon school districts in western Pennsylvania. The second program, totaling $1.1 million, will work with the York City School District and New Hope Academy Charter School.

12th annual Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Golf Outing to be held in June

Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its 12th annual Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 15, at the Hickory VFW Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. Each golfer will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win golf for four at the Penn State Blue and White Course, including a night stay at one of Penn State’s lodging establishments at University Park. Proceeds from the event benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships and special projects. Only the first 36 paid teams will be included. Deadline to register is May 31. Shenango to particpate in World Book Night

Penn State Shenango will participate in World Book Night from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in the Lartz Memorial Library located in downtown Sharon, Pa. This year’s book, "Middle School: The Worse Years of My Life" by James Patterson, will be free to the public on a first come, first served basis; quantities are limited. Shenango librarian to speak on supporting LGBT students in higher education

Penn State Shenango will conclude its 2012-13 Faculty Lecture Series with a lecture by Matthew P. Ciszek, assistant librarian and head of the Lartz Memorial Library, who will speak on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students in higher education at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22. His lecture titled “The Rainbow Connection” will take place in Sharon Hall, Room 105, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

Penn State Shenango to offer ‘Cyber Security for Everyman’ workshop

The Technology Council of Northwest PA will host a workshop titled "Cyber Security for Everyman" at Penn State Shenango via video conference from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in its Lecture Hall, Room 321. The event is free to all Technology Council of NWPA members, as well at Penn State students, faculty and staff. Community members are invited to attend the workshop for a fee of $15 — checks should be made payable to the Technology Council of Northwest PA.

Earth Fest 2013 to feature live music, kids’ activities, artists’ market

Adults and children of all ages are invited to join the fun as Penn State Shenango holds Earth Fest 2013 from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music and entertainment, children’s activities, the Farm Bureau Mobile Agriculture Science Lab, an artists’ market, Penn State Berkey Ice Cream, green information from local organizations and businesses, a recycling event, and eco-friendly cars from Montrose Auto Group and Mel Grata Scion. Food will be available to purchase.

Shenango OT Club to collect, package items for veterans

From now through March 20, Penn State Shenango’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Club will be holding a collection drive of personal items to be included in care packages for veterans in Erie, Pa. Collection boxes are located in the Great Hall of the Sharon Hall building on Penn Avenue and in the Lartz Memorial Library on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following its collection drive, the OT Club will be putting together and delivering packages to veterans at the Erie VA Medical Center during its class field trip April 5.

Penn State Shenango's auditorium was filled to capacity Feb. 13 at the Friends of Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Dinner featuring guest speaker Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien spoke about Penn State football, his dedicated players and the respect he has for the University. His humble yet inspiring words were highly received by Penn State alumni and friends. Athletic Director Dave Joyner and Alumni Relations Executive Director Roger Williams, who were part of the program, also gave motivating remarks to the crowd.

Community invited to campus book sale, raffle to benefit United Way

Penn State Shenango will hold a community book sale and basket raffle from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the McDowell Hall Community Room located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa., to benefit the Mercer County United Way.

Hundreds of gently used books, as well as some CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles, will be available in prices from 50 cents to $2.

O'Brien to speak at Shenango Alumni Society fundraising dinner

Penn State football coach and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Bill O'Brien will be this year's guest speaker at the Penn State Shenango Friends of Penn State 2013 Annual Dinner on Feb. 13. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets are $50 per person (cash bar will be available). The event is sponsored by the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society. Proceeds will go to Penn State Shenango student scholarships and Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. To call O'Brien's first year as a head coach "great" would be a vast understatement.

Named the Nittany Lions' 15th head football coach on Jan. 6, 2012, O'Brien quickly and effectively established the foundation and shared his passionate vision for the new era of Penn State football during his initial eight months on the job.

Students volunteer time to honor Martin Luther King

Penn State Beaver students, along with those from other campuses, celebrated A Day On, Not a Day Off by volunteering their day away from the classroom to work in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 21. Fifty students from Beaver, Penn State DuBois, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Shenango worked for organizations in DuBois while other students worked locally in Beaver County. The campuses annually join forces to work in communities in observance of the holiday.
