The Screaming Orphans to perform at evening concert

Penn State Shenango will host the Irish band The Screaming Orphans at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Penn State Shenango auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The four Diver sisters' energetic live shows combine elements of both pop and traditional Irish music, which has been described as a "collision of gravel and honey," creating a unique performance that has audiences captivated and wanting more. Nash speaks at Chautauqua on presidential power and ethics

Phil Nash, associate professor of history at Penn State Shenango, recently spoke at the Chautauqua Institution during its summer interfaith theme on "The Ethics of Presidential Power." Nash discussed the historical context and ethical judgment surrounding the use of the atomic bomb at the end of World War II in a lecture titled "Truman and the Ethics of the Bomb." Nash touched on the already brutal conditions of the war to that point, the position of the newly appointed president, the moral conflict with which Truman was ultimately challenged, and how lessons from that challenge can be used to guide governments and leaders today.

Student Town Hall Forum set for Sept. 19

Penn State's fall 2012 Student Town Hall Forum is scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium on the University Park campus.

The event, sponsored by the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG), the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and the University Park Undergraduate Association, provides students an opportunity to openly discuss the future of Penn State with Penn State administrators. It also will be streamed live online for those at the campuses at http://wpsu.org/live.

Campus organizes inaugural Jane A. Williams Memorial 5K run/1.5 walk

Penn State Shenango will hold an inaugural Dr. Jane A. Williams Memorial 5K Run/1.5 Mile Walk on Saturday, Oct. 6, beginning at 9 a.m. on the Shenango campus located in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event is in honor of Williams, who was employed at the Shenango campus for 25 years until she passed away this past May after a brief illness. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Jane A. Williams Memorial Fund.

Award-winning author to present 'Around the World in 90 Minutes'

Award-winning author Marty Essen will present his high-energy multimedia show, "Around the World in 90 Minutes," at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, in the Penn State Shenango auditorium located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. An abbreviated version of this free show, "Around the World in 50 Minutes," will take place at noon in the campus' Sharon Hall room 105.

Comedian Kelly Taylor to perform at Shenango

Comedian Kelly Taylor will perform free at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, at Penn State Shenango. The event, which is open to the public, will be held in the campus auditorium located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Free smoking cessation class offered at Penn State Shenango

Penn State Shenango is holding a free, six-session smoking cessation class, facilitated by staff from the Behavioral Health Commission of Mercer County. Classes will be held from noon to 1 p.m. beginning Monday, Sept. 10, in Room 105 of Sharon Hall, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

Shenango campus and SRHS's School of Nursing announce partnership

Penn State Shenango and the Sharon Regional Health System School of Nursing have announced the formation of a partnership for nursing education that will offer area residents the unique opportunity to earn both a diploma in nursing from Sharon Regional and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Penn State Shenango in a seamless and timely manner.

Fall Enrollment Day to be held July 17

Penn State Shenango will hold its 2012 Fall Enrollment Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, in the Admissions Office, Lecture Hall 225, in downtown Sharon, Pennsylvania. Students who are interested in enrolling in the 2012 fall semester are encouraged to attend. Fall semester begins Monday, August 27. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with admissions counselors, tour the campus, apply on-line, and complete their FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid). Prospective students must bring any transcripts from high school or previously attended colleges or universities, as well as their 2011 tax returns in order to complete their application. Faculty work to develop curriculum for sustainability-focused course

Penn State's Center for Sustainability held a faculty workshop to develop a consistent curriculum for a new course, Foundations of Leadership in Sustainability (Sustainability 200), on Wednesday, May 23. Faculty and staff from seven Penn State campuses were represented at the workshop: Abington, Beaver, Erie, Lehigh Valley, Shenango, University Park, and York.

Andy Needham Band to perform at Shenango on May 12

A free concert featuring the Andy Needham Band will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, in the auditorium of the Penn State Shenango campus in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the student Lions' Lighthouse organization. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Commencement ceremony slated for Friday, May 4

Penn State Shenango will hold its 2012 Spring Commencement Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4, in the Shenango campus auditorium with a reception immediately following. Fred Leeds, chancellor, will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees on 63 graduating students. This year, Penn State welcomes James B. Lester, CEO, LEE Identi-fication Services, as its guest speaker. Lester graduated with an associate degree in 1975 from Penn State Shenango where he was president of the Student Government Association (SGA).

Second Student Town Hall Forum to be held April 17

Penn State's second Student Town Hall Forum, where students can openly discuss with administrators the future of Penn State in light of recent events, will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium and will be live streamed to the campuses at http://wpsu.org/live. Free training workshop for high school students with disabilities

A free training workshop for high school students with disabilities and their families "Planning for Life After High School" will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, in the Forker Lab Forum at Penn State Shenango in downtown Sharon, Pa. The workshop is presented by The Pennsylvania Training Partnership for People with Disabilities and Families in cooperation with Penn State Shenango's Office of Disability Services.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will include live music and entertainment, children's activities, recycling events, an artists' market, Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream, green information from local organizations and businesses, eco-friendly cars from Montrose Nissan and Mel Grata Chevrolet, and more. 12th annual Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Golf Outing to be held in June

Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its 12th annual Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 15, at the Hickory VFW Golf Course in Hermitage, Pa. Each golfer will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win golf for four at the Penn State Blue and White Course, including a night stay at one of Penn State’s lodging establishments at University Park. Proceeds from the event benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships and special projects. Only the first 36 paid teams will be included. Deadline to register is May 31. Penn State Shenango will conclude its 2012-13 Faculty Lecture Series with a lecture by Matthew P. Ciszek, assistant librarian and head of the Lartz Memorial Library, who will speak on supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students in higher education at 7 p.m. Monday, April 22. His lecture titled “The Rainbow Connection” will take place in Sharon Hall, Room 105, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa.

The Technology Council of Northwest PA will host a workshop titled "Cyber Security for Everyman" at Penn State Shenango via video conference from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in its Lecture Hall, Room 321. The event is free to all Technology Council of NWPA members, as well at Penn State students, faculty and staff. Community members are invited to attend the workshop for a fee of $15 — checks should be made payable to the Technology Council of Northwest PA.

Shenango OT Club to collect, package items for veterans

From now through March 20, Penn State Shenango’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Club will be holding a collection drive of personal items to be included in care packages for veterans in Erie, Pa. Collection boxes are located in the Great Hall of the Sharon Hall building on Penn Avenue and in the Lartz Memorial Library on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following its collection drive, the OT Club will be putting together and delivering packages to veterans at the Erie VA Medical Center during its class field trip April 5.

Penn State Shenango's auditorium was filled to capacity Feb. 13 at the Friends of Penn State Shenango Alumni Society Dinner featuring guest speaker Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien spoke about Penn State football, his dedicated players and the respect he has for the University. His humble yet inspiring words were highly received by Penn State alumni and friends. Athletic Director Dave Joyner and Alumni Relations Executive Director Roger Williams, who were part of the program, also gave motivating remarks to the crowd.

Community invited to campus book sale, raffle to benefit United Way

Penn State Shenango will hold a community book sale and basket raffle from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the McDowell Hall Community Room located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa., to benefit the Mercer County United Way.

Hundreds of gently used books, as well as some CDs, DVDs, games and puzzles, will be available in prices from 50 cents to $2.

O'Brien to speak at Shenango Alumni Society fundraising dinner

Penn State football coach and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Bill O'Brien will be this year's guest speaker at the Penn State Shenango Friends of Penn State 2013 Annual Dinner on Feb. 13. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets are $50 per person (cash bar will be available). The event is sponsored by the Penn State Shenango Alumni Society. Proceeds will go to Penn State Shenango student scholarships and Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. To call O'Brien's first year as a head coach "great" would be a vast understatement.

Named the Nittany Lions' 15th head football coach on Jan. 6, 2012, O'Brien quickly and effectively established the foundation and shared his passionate vision for the new era of Penn State football during his initial eight months on the job.

Students volunteer time to honor Martin Luther King

Penn State Beaver students, along with those from other campuses, celebrated A Day On, Not a Day Off by volunteering their day away from the classroom to work in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 21. Fifty students from Beaver, Penn State DuBois, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Shenango worked for organizations in DuBois while other students worked locally in Beaver County. The campuses annually join forces to work in communities in observance of the holiday.
