Drama to mark celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday

An historical drama chronicling the famed all-Black 369th Infantry Regiment of World War I will highlight Penn State Schuylkill's observance of the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The presentation of the drama, "In War, In Love: A World War I Love Story," will mark another collaboration between the campus and PenOwl Productions Theatre Company in celebration of King Day on campus.

Religious and philosophical forum resumes Feb. 27

The16th annual Religious and Philosophical Forum on the Schuylkill campus continues Feb. 27 when Charles Cantalupo, Penn State Capital College professor of English, comparative literature, and African studies duscusses "The World from the Red Sea, Then and Now." The 2003-04 forum series, with the theme of "The Mutual Influence of Religion and Society," is free and open to the public. Each installment is at noon in the R. Michael Fryer Conference Center.

Former school director installed on national board of directors

William A. Welsh Jr., former director of the Penn State Capital College School of Science, Engineering, and Technology has been installed as a member of the Board of Directors of ABET, the recognized accrediting body for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. Welsh retired from the college as an associate professor emeritus of engineering. He resides in Lawn. Pa.

Schuylkill campus earns University Incentive Grant

Penn State's Commission for Adult Learners recently selected ten Incentive Grant Programs representing ten Penn State locations for funding, including Penn State Schuylkill. The Incentive Grant Program supports program and service initiatives for adult learners at all University locations. Grants of up to $350 were available, with the requirements that each campus provide matching funds.

Personal story of wrongful imprisonment coming to campus

There are times when the court system fails and there is no justice. That was the case with Joyce Ann Brown, who was wrongly accused and convicted of a crime she did not commit. She then spent more than nine years in the Texas prison system working to secure her release. Brown will appear on the Penn State Schuylkill campus Monday, Nov. 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. speaking about her imprisonment, release, and her ongoing efforts on behalf of other wrongfully convicted people across the nation.

Provost and dean to meet with alumni in Pittsburgh, York

Capital College Provost and Dean Madlyn L. Hanes is hitting the road to meet with alumni. A "Meet the Provost and Dean Tour" with Hanes kicks off Nov. 18 at the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh and Nov. 20 at the Sheraton Four Points in York. All Penn State Schuylkill alumni are encouraged to attend and join in for food, prizes, and a virtual campus tour. Stops in the tour in 2004 will include Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Washington, D.C. Those dates and locations will be announced at a later date.

Koch named Alumni Society president

Joel L. Koch '83, is the newly elected president of the Schuylkill Alumni Society, succeeding Liz Bligan '81, '98g, who served as the first Society president. An investment representative for Edward Jones Investments, Koch resides in Schuylkill County with his wife and two sons. He holds an associate degree in business from the Schuylkill campus.

Schuylkill campus alumni reunion date set

The award-winning Schuylkill campus alumni reunion returns on May 1, 2004. The third annual event, held at the campus, will feature food, fun, and a presentation on the history of rock and roll by William J Kelly, head of integrative arts in the College of Arts and Architecture at University Park. Kelly has presented this lecture in the "Huddle with the Faculty" program series presented before home football games.
