Achampong named chancellor at Penn State Mont Alto
Francis K. Achampong, currently the chancellor at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, has been named the next chancellor of Penn State Mont Alto, effective Aug. 1, 2013. Achampong succeeds David Gnage, who announced last fall that he would retire at the end of the 2012-13 academic year following more than 10 years in the position.
Penn State Mont Alto graduates 146 students, 73 percent were women
Penn State Mont Alto held its Spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 4, in its Multipurpose Activities Center. U.S. Army Major William Lloyd, an alumnus of the campus, delivered the address.
Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses
Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.
'Lumberjills' shine for Penn State Woodsmen Team
Two women from the Penn State Woodsmen Team placed first in their events at a competition in Syracuse, N.Y., on March 23, defeating their opponents in the women's obstacle course and women's stock saw.
Penn State Mont Alto Academic Festival to be held April 19
The Eighth Annual Penn State Mont Alto Academic Festival, sponsored by F & M Trust Company and Cumberland Valley Tree Service, will be held on Friday, April 19 in the Multipurpose Activities Center. This exciting event displays some of the academic highlights which have been researched, developed, and created throughout the 2012-13 academic year by Penn State Mont Alto students.
Annual free Community Health Fair at Mont Alto is April 20
Penn State Mont Alto will again offer a free, fun-filled day for the community with its eighth annual Community Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, in the Multi-Purpose Activities Building. The fair features horses, parachutes, puppet shows, ambulances, fire trucks, and a fly-in by the Life Lion helicopter. Participants also can shake hands and take a picture with the Penn State Nittany Lion.
Alumnus Maj. William H. Lloyd to speak at Spring Commencement ceremony
U.S. Army Maj. William H. Lloyd, Class of 1982, will address the graduating class at Penn State Mont Alto’s 2013 Spring Commencement ceremony.
Campus to host second annual Blue and White 5K run on April 13
Penn State Mont Alto’s Lion Ambassadors will host their second annual Blue and White 5K presented by Herman Chiropractic on April 13, rain or shine. Walkers and runners of all ages are welcome to participate. The event includes a Little Lion Run (1-mile) and the Blue and White 5K.
Penn State Mont Alto moving to four-year nursing degree program
As our health care delivery system is increasing in complexity, additional education is needed to support the nurses who must navigate it. To better aligns its curriculum with the projected future of nursing practice and employment opportunities, Penn State Mont Alto will transition its RN Nursing degree from associate of science (A.S). to a bachelor of science (B.S.) program.
MedCamp 2013 to offer area students opportunity to explore health care careers
Penn State Mont Alto, Summit Health, Quincy Village and Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center have teamed up again to offer an educational summer camp. MedCamp is open to students, who meet the application requirements and are interested in learning more about health care careers. The cost for the week-long program is $225 per student, including meals and transportation.
Board approves 2013-14 room and board rates
Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (March 15) approved room and board rates for the 2013-14 academic year. The average room and board rate, which includes a standard double room and the most common meal plan, will be $4,685 a semester, a 4.23 percent increase over 2012-13. The increase addresses a projected rise in food and utilities expenses, as well as necessary maintenance, facility renewal and strategic needs.

Mont Alto's THON effort its biggest to date
Penn State Mont Alto sent two students and 65 plus supporters last weekend to the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately referred to as THON, at University Park. The Mont Alto THON group raised pledges totaling more than $33,000, a record for the campus.
Mont Alto Film Project announces casting call for second feature film
The Mont Alto Film Project is currently seeking actors for "Ghosting," a full-length independent feature film. "Ghosting" is a micro-budget, non-union production of the Mont Alto Film Project in conjunction with Third Child Productions under the auspices of Penn State Mont Alto. Auditions are open to all actors. They will be held on two Saturdays at the campus.
