Penn State Lehigh Valley celebrated the installation of the Alpha Zeta Pi chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, international honor society in education, on Dec. 2 during a ceremony, at Iron Lakes Country Club in Allentown. This is the first education honor society to be established at the campus and only the third Kappa Delta Pi chapter among Penn State campuses.

More than 150 friends and family members attended the celebration during which 28 students and seven faculty members were initiated. Julie Ealy, associate professor of chemistry at Penn State Lehigh Valley and lifetime member of Kappa Delta Pi, delivered the keynote address. In order to be eligible for the Penn State Lehigh Valley chapter, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better, be in sophomore standing, and be involved in leadership and service organizations.

Jeffrey Tambor, Emmy-nominated film and television actor, will be the featured speaker at Penn State Lehigh Valley's 2013 commencement ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. May 4, at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem.

Tambor has earned deep respect, as well as multiple Emmy Award nominations, for being one of the most versatile and accomplished character actors in film and television. Tambor's roles in such popular programs as "The Larry Sanders Show," "Arrested Development" and "The Hangover" reveal his unique comedic gifts, while his roles in films such as "And Justice for All" and "Meet Joe Black" display the depth of his dramatic sensibilities.

Two Penn State Lehigh Valley art instructors' work will be featured in a new exhibition at the Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery. Ann Lalik, gallery director at Penn State Lehigh Valley, and Ron DeLong, instructor of art, will participate in "Art and Science," which runs from Jan. 10 to Feb. 22 with an opening reception, and artist and faculty meet-and-greet from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 10.

The objective of this exhibit is exploring the various disciplines of science through the visual arts. Six members of Penn State Berks Science Division faculty were interviewed on video, and from these interviews, artists were invited to select a faculty member(s) whose research intrigued them or paralleled their own investigations. Artists were selected on their ability to interpret this material in an aesthetic way, using the information as a point of departure for their creative endeavors. Art work may illuminate, define or interpret the information provided.

The Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley will present "Mann's Mind," a new exhibit featuring the sculptural objects of Thomas Mann, from Jan. 28 to March 16. From 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 31, an artist lecture will be held, and a reception is planned from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mann's style of jewelry object, known as Techno-Romantic, combines high-tech materials and romantic imagery. He currently exhibits his jewelry and sculpture in more than 200 galleries nationwide and internationally in Canada and Australia.

Penn State Lehigh Valley, in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), is offering a review course designed to provide an overview of key areas in Human Resource Management and prepare candidates for the Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources certification examinations.

Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Penn State Lehigh Valley campus in Center Valley on the following Saturdays: Jan. 19, 26, Feb. 9, 23, March 2, 16, 23, and April 6, 13 and 27.

Amy Burkett, television station manager at WLVT-PBS39 and host of its popular news magazine show "Tempo InDepth," will teach a new television field production course at Penn State Lehigh Valley this spring. The course, which will be held at PBS 39's brand new studios at the SteelStacks in Bethlehem, is expected to be of particular interest to students pursuing the campus' new bachelor's degree in corporate communication.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our students since, historically, students interested in communications could not take this kind of class until they moved to University Park," said Nichola Gutgold, coordinator of the corporate communication degree program at Penn State Lehigh Valley. "Our excitement about the course is heightened by Amy's involvement. She is going to bring a lot to this course and give students a very personalized, hands-on experience."

The Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) has named Lloyd Irons, a freshman guard from Penn State Lehigh Valley, as this week's PSUAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Irons is currently ranked second in the PSUAC for points per game with 21.4, and he is also ranked second in rebounds per game with 10.4.

Two other Penn State Lehigh Valley athletes also received awards this week. Allyson Niemi, a freshman at the campus, was named First Team All-Conference in the 2012 PSUAC Tennis All-Conference Honors. Junior Mo James also received an Honorable Mention in the same conference.
