Representing thousands of peers is no easy job. Just ask Andy Dessel, of Chambersburg, Pa., a senior public policy major and communications minor at Penn State Harrisburg. Dessel was selected to participate in the 2012-13 Presidential Fellows Program – a position open to only one student throughout Penn State each year. And though it was a tough job with deadlines, heavy workloads, and personal responsibility, Dessel stressed that the program’s benefits made it well worth the effort.

Eight seniors in the Penn State Harrisburg Capital College Honors Program presented their theses -- on topics ranging from body image to green roofs and recycled tires -- just before graduation May 4. All said working on their projects -- which in some cases took two years to complete -- has given them direction.

Margaret Jaster, associate professor of English and humanities at Penn State Harrisburg, has received The American Shakespeare Center’s 2013 Words in Action Award. Presented annually on Shakespeare’s birthday, the award recognizes teachers from elementary to university levels whose approach to Shakespeare inspires students and personifies Shakespeare’s advice to be “great in act as you have been in thought.”

Analyzing how a company operates is an important part of any MBA program. Penn State’s online Intercollege MBA (iMBA) takes this educational analysis a step further by involving iMBA students in real-world learning. From May 12 to 17, the 54 students who have been working together online will meet in person to study at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Simon Bronner, distinguished professor of American studies and folklore at Penn State Harrisburg, received the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS) Graduate Faculty Teaching Award, “designed to identify excellence and creativity in curriculum development and implementation and graduate education at the master's and doctoral levels,” at the organization’s annual meeting April 12 in New Brunswick, N.J.

Penn State Harrisburg student offered Fulbright to teach English abroad

Penn State Harrisburg senior interdisciplinary humanities major Cassandra Romanowski has been offered a Fulbright grant to teach English in Malaysia next year. Of the program’s hundreds of applicants from across the country, she was one of only 75 who made the cut -– a first-time achievement for a student at the college.

Penn State Harrisburg building reopens after bomb threat

An anonymous note was found today in the Penn State Harrisburg Olmsted Building alleging that there was a bomb in the building that would explode at 1 p.m. The note was found at approximately 12:50 and the building was evacuated immediately. A search for suspicious items and explosive devices was conducted and nothing was found.

The building was re-opened at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

William M. Lambert, president and chief executive officer of Mine Safety Appliances Co. (MSA) and Penn State Harrisburg alumnus, will deliver Penn State Harrisburg’s spring 2013 commencement address beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. The college will confer more than 650 undergraduate and graduate degrees this semester.

A group of electrical engineering and electrical engineering technology juniors and seniors from Penn State Harrisburg will look to take their second victory as they head to the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) region 2 Student Activities Conference. The students will compete in the “scratch” Micromouse Competition, which requires students to construct an autonomous robotic “mouse” from scratch, that must navigate to the center of an approximately 64-square-foot random maze in the shortest amount of time possible.

A commemorative bench has been purchased in memory of Howard Sachs, former professor of biology, educator, administrator, scientist and friend of Penn State Harrisburg. Sachs served the campus from 1987 to 2011. He died in 2011.
