Nursing home administrator training offered at Greater Allegheny

Beginning Friday, Feb. 3, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Continuing Education Department will offer a 120-hour Nursing Home Administrator Training Program. Courses will take place on Fridays and Saturdays through March 24.

This program usually is offered in the spring and fall at Penn State Greater Allegheny. For more information, contact Roxanne Daykon at 412-657-9049 or rxd18@psu.edu

New fitness center classes -- 'Body Blast' and Zumba -- offered

The Penn State Greater Allegheny Fitness Center is now offering "Body Blast" and Zumba classes. "Body Blast," a total body workout, runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday evenings and includes upper body, lower body, abs, core and cardio. Zumba, a program that fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fun fitness experience, is offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings. These classes are free for students, staff and alumni with a Fitness Center pass.

Coaches vs. Cancer event to be held Feb. 2

Penn State Greater Allegheny will team up against cancer at their Coaches vs. Cancer event on Thursday, Feb. 2. During both the men's and women's basketball games, coaches will join their teams to show support in the fight against cancer. The women's game begins at 6 p.m. During the half time period of the women's game a student vs. coach shoot out will be held. The men's game begins at 8 p.m. At half time during the men's game, a faculty vs. student scrimmage will be held. All admissions and donations will go to the American Cancer Society.

Teaching International presents Leigh-Ann Bedal

Leigh-Ann Bedal, assistant professor in anthropology at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, will present "Constructed Paradise: Conspicuous Consumption and the Petra Garden and Pool Complex" at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center. Bedal received her degrees from California State University, University of California, Berkley (master's degree) and the University of Pennsylvania (doctoral degree), and specializes in Near Eastern archaeology, urbanization and garden archaeology. She has excavated in Iraq, Syria, Israel, Italy and Jordan, and is the project director of the Petra Garden and Pool-Complex Excavation in Jordan.

Wii tournament to benefit kids with cancer

At 7 p.m. Jan. 25, Penn State Greater Allegheny will hold a Wii tournament in the cafeteria of the Student Community Center. Participants will pay $3 to compete with each other to "Michael Jackson: The Experience" and "Just Dance" to determine who has the best dance moves. All proceeds will benefit cancer research.

Inside Joke Films to perform on Jan. 26

Penn State Greater Allegheny will host a live comedy show by Inside Joke Films at noon Jan. 26, in the cafeteria of the Student Community Center. The program is free and open to the public.

Freshman named wrestler of the week

Michael Pavasko, a freshman wrestler at Penn State Greater Allegheny, was named the wrestler of the week by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Pavasko finished first last week in the 165-pound division at the Waynesburg Invitational. He scored a 3-1 decision over Tyler George from Ohio Valley to become the first wrestler in Greater Allegheny's history to finish first at such an event. Penn State Greater Allegheny finished 12th in the 31 team tournament.

Hamlet presented at Greater Allegheny on Jan. 21

Three Rivers Theatre Company will present "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Penn State Greater Allegheny campus in the Cultural and Fitness Center, 4000 University Drive in McKeesport, Pa.

Exploring majors and careers on Jan. 31

Penn State Greater Allegheny Career Services will sponsor, "Coffee Talk: Exploring Majors & Careers," on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, in the Frable Building, Room 122 from 10-11:00 a.m. Erin Bridgen from Penn State Greater Allegheny Career Services will be talking with students about majors available throughout Penn State, career options related to specific majors, and how to explore careers using Penn State resources.

Off-Campus Housing Fair set for Feb. 9 at Penn State Greater Allegheny

Athletes earn PSUAC Academic All-Conference

With the release of the PSUAC Academic All-Conference Awards for the fall, nine Penn State Greater Allegheny athletes have earned honors. The Academic All-Conference Team includes those student-athletes who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester of competition or a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and completion of at least 24 credits.

Student-athletes that participated in cross country, golf, volleyball were eligible for the awards. Those being honored from Greater Allegheny include: Megan Carroll, Samantha Clark, Helena Vasser, Alyssa Finocchi, Corinne Wilson and Desiree McClain for volleyball; Peter Subosits, Brandon Jacobs and Jared Reesman for cross country; and Michael Ericson for golf.

Martin Luther King Jr. day of community service

On Monday, Jan. 16, nine students from Penn State Greater Allegheny will travel to Penn State New Kensington to join other Penn State students from New Kensington, Fayette, Beaver, DuBois, and Shenango for the Martin Luther King Jr., not a day off, but a day on community service. Students will arrive at New Kensington about 9 a.m. After a welcome and keynote address, they will disperse to Habitat for Humanity Restore, the Alle-Kiski Valley Historical Society, Tri-City Life Center, Valley Community Services and other sites. Students could be doing anything from cleaning, organizing, working with the elderly, and/or children. This is the fourth year that these campuses have provided community service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year 62 students will participate.

Performance of 'Kings's Dream' scheduled for Jan. 18

A multimedia performance of "King's Dream" will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The performance is a tribute to the life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. Key Arts Productions uses songs, live narrative and powerful film footage in this presentation of what led to an era of social unrest in America during the turbulent 1960s.

Young becomes first Penn State librarian elected president of ALA

Courtney Louise Young, head librarian at the J. Clarence Kelly Library at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been elected as 2014-15 president of the American Library Association (ALA). Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State, noted, "Courtney Young is the first Penn State librarian to hold this honor and will bring our University to the table of this policy-making body of the ALA."

After falling 3-0 in their first game, Penn State Greater Allegheny (28-15, 19-3 PSUAC), led by sophomore right-hander Matt Klena, defeated Penn College 10-1, clinching the program's second Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Tournament championship in the last three years.

Greater Allegheny to launch CPA program in May

A series of one-day sessions will be offered this summer as part of the certified public accounting program at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Participants receive continuing educations credits for the eight-hour courses.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Penn State Greater Allegheny’s spring 2013 commencement will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, in the Wunderley Gymnasium. Chancellor Curtiss E. Porter will preside as diplomas are conferred to students receiving baccalaureate and associate degrees. President and CEO of MARC USA, Michelle Fabrizi, will be the keynote speaker.

Psi Chi honor society inducts new members

Penn State Greater Allegheny's chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct new members April 10, during a 5:45 p.m. ceremony and reception in the Traina Room, Student Community Center. The ceremony will be followed by the campus’ Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. in the Wunderley Gymnasium.
