Penn State launches Accelerated RN to B.S. in Nursing at four sites

In 2010, the Institute of Medicine recommended 80 percent of the nursing workforce hold at least a bachelor's degree by 2020 to meet the demands of an ever-changing health care system. To help Pennsylvania nurses achieve this education goal, Penn State is offering an Accelerated RN to B.S. in Nursing program at four locations this fall: Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus; Penn State Greater Allegheny; Penn State DuBois; and Penn State Learning Center in Lewistown.

Penn State Greater Allegheny wins Readers' Choice Award

Penn State Greater Allegheny has been named the 2012 Gold Winner in the College/University division of The Pittsburgh Tribune Review's Readers' Choice Award. Readers of the Tribune Review newspaper voted for Penn State Greater Allegheny as their top choice in the college/university category.

Students can complete a bachelor's degree at Penn State Greater Allegheny or can complete the first two years of their education in one of the more than 160 majors offered at Penn State. Greater Allegheny assists in hosting Pirates baseball clinic

Last week at Helen Richey Field in McKeesport, Pa., Greater Allegheny head baseball coach Jim Chester -- aided by assistant baseball coach Joe Ranalli and other numerous Greater Allegheny staff and local high school baseball coaches -- teamed up with the Major League Baseball Players Association: Players Trust charitable organization and conducted a free, three-hour instructional clinic. More than 250 kids between the ages of 8 and 15 from multiple communities in the McKeesport area took part.

Faculty from Vietnam study at Greater Allegheny campus this summer

Twelve faculty members from Duy Tan University in Da Nang, Vietnam, arrived in Pittsburgh on June 21 for a four-week stay on campus at Penn State Greater Allegheny. The visit is part of a partnership between Penn State Greater Allegheny and Duy Tan University launched in the summer of 2010. The Duy Tan faculty members are taking courses from Penn State business faculty, studying strategic management, money and banking, financial modeling, and financial markets and institutions, before returning to Vietnam on July 23.

Hepner receives award as an emerging photographer

Second Student Town Hall Forum to be held April 17

Penn State's second Student Town Hall Forum, where students can openly discuss with administrators the future of Penn State in light of recent events, will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium and will be live streamed to the campuses at http://wpsu.org/live. The event is for students only. Students watching from other Penn State campuses can submit questions at commonwealthtown@psu.edu.

Greater Allegheny 5K is back on April 21

This year's run/walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, starting at the Penn State Greater Allegheny Student Community Center and winding through Renzie Park.

Registration is $10 for students/kids and $25 for adults, which includes a cotton T-shirt and post-race goodies. New this year we are offering dri-fit T-shirts at a slightly higher registration cost. Runner's High will be timing our event again this year. The registration deadline is March 30.

Spring break travelers reminded to take precautions for safety

A spring break travel alert for Mexico has been issued by the U.S. Department of State for U.S. citizens traveling to that country. Individuals who may be traveling during spring break to any locale are urged to use common sense precautions. University Police offers some general tips and links for more information about traveling abroad.

'The Real J. Edgar Hoover' will be presented on March 12

Douglas M. Charles, assistant professor of history at Penn State Greater Allegheny, will speak on the topic "The Real J. Edgar Hoover" from 6 to 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Monday, March 12, in the Ostermayer Room in the Student Community Center on campus. Following his presentation, there will be a screening of the new film "J Edgar."

Penn State students rocked Bryce Jordan Center during the weekend of Feb. 17-19 to give children and their families hope in the fight against pediatric cancer. Thousands of dancers and volunteers had another successful year as they celebrated the 40th anniversary of THON.

Penn State Greater Allegheny raised mover than $20,000! Congratulations to Janet Zayas and Ahraz Zaman, Penn State Greater Allegheny dancers for the event. Morale captains included: Sara Payo, Nicole Bacvinskas, Alejandra Rodriguez, Cassandra Studeny, Corinne Wilson, Randy Langi, Ryan Cherry, Lysandra Hutchinson, Tecoria Butler and John Alligood.

Belly dancing workshops offered

The Penn State Greater Allegheny campus community is invited to a series of four belly dancing workshops. The workshops are scheduled from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. for Thursdays, March 1, March 29, April 5, and Tuesday, April 17, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center.

The instructor for the workshops is Susan Golez. Golez's website is www.unsukdance.com. At the conclusion of the workshops, a Spring Hafla will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center.

Faculty contribute to Encyclopedia of Cyber Behavior

Penn State Greater Allegheny Faculty members Elizabeth Mazur, Margaret Signorella and Michelle Hough have contributed a chapter to the Encyclopedia of Cyber Behavior. The Encyclopedia of Cyber Behavior is intended to offer the first definitive and most comprehensive presentation of existing substantial knowledge concerning cyber behavior.

Assisted living and personal care courses offered

On Feb. 28 and 29, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Continuing Education Department will offer a 15-hour assisted-living administrator program. The standardized, department-approved curriculum for assisted-living administrators includes the following courses: Assisted-Living Resident Composition/Aging in Place; Person Centered Care; Neurological Impairments; Infection Control and Informed Consent.

Beginning Thursday, March 4, through Wednesday, March 29, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Continuing Education department will offer a 100-hour Personal Care Home Administrator Program. The standardized, department-approved curriculum for personal-care home administrators also can be used as annual training for personal-care home administrators.

Gaming company needs English majors

Schell Games, a full-service game design and development studio specializing in creating innovative interactive experiences, will be on campus from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Room 122 of the Frable Building. Representatives from Schell will talk with students about current needs in the gaming industry, including the need for students with degrees in English. All students are welcome and pizza will be served.

Head men’s hockey coach Guy Gadowsky will join the 2013 Penn State Coaches Caravan Thursday, May 9, during stops at Penn State DuBois and Pittsburgh. The luncheon in DuBois will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the reception in Pittsburgh will begin at 6 p.m. on the final day of the Caravan.

Young becomes first Penn State librarian elected president of ALA

Courtney Louise Young, head librarian at the J. Clarence Kelly Library at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been elected as 2014-15 president of the American Library Association (ALA). Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State, noted, "Courtney Young is the first Penn State librarian to hold this honor and will bring our University to the table of this policy-making body of the ALA."

After falling 3-0 in their first game, Penn State Greater Allegheny (28-15, 19-3 PSUAC), led by sophomore right-hander Matt Klena, defeated Penn College 10-1, clinching the program's second Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Tournament championship in the last three years.

Greater Allegheny to launch CPA program in May

A series of one-day sessions will be offered this summer as part of the certified public accounting program at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Participants receive continuing educations credits for the eight-hour courses.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Penn State Greater Allegheny’s spring 2013 commencement will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, in the Wunderley Gymnasium. Chancellor Curtiss E. Porter will preside as diplomas are conferred to students receiving baccalaureate and associate degrees. President and CEO of MARC USA, Michelle Fabrizi, will be the keynote speaker.

Psi Chi honor society inducts new members

Penn State Greater Allegheny's chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct new members April 10, during a 5:45 p.m. ceremony and reception in the Traina Room, Student Community Center. The ceremony will be followed by the campus’ Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. in the Wunderley Gymnasium.
