ABSENCE is an annual review of the best literary and visual art produced by students, staff, faculty and alumni of the campus each academic year.

Two students from Penn State Greater Allegheny danced the night away at Penn State’s THON, raising money to fight pediatric cancer. The Greater Allegheny campus raised nearly $11,000 towards the THON total of more than $12.3 million.

Campus plans for THON
Two Penn State Greater Allegheny students will dance in the University's annual dance marathon, THON, from Feb. 15 to 17, at the Bryce Jordan Center at University Park. The dancers will attempt to stay on their feet for 46 hours.
Dancers are Julia Qualiotto, a junior business management major, and Andrew Pricener, a sophomore business management major.
Greater Allegheny celebrates Spirit Week through Feb. 8
Penn State Greater Allegheny's celebration of Spirit Week began on Monday and continues all week. The week provides a much-needed, fun way to break up the winter blahs.

Annual blood drive to benefit THON set for today
Helping save lives is always in season. Faculty, staff and students at Penn State Greater Allegheny will be doing just that during the annual THON Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today (Feb. 6), in the Ostermayer Room, Student Community Center.
Students volunteer time to honor Martin Luther King
Penn State Beaver students, along with those from other campuses, celebrated A Day On, Not a Day Off by volunteering their day away from the classroom to work in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 21. Fifty students from Beaver, Penn State DuBois, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Penn State New Kensington and Penn State Shenango worked for organizations in DuBois while other students worked locally in Beaver County. The campuses annually join forces to work in communities in observance of the holiday.
Admissions event: Be a Penn State student for a day
High school students and transfer students are invited to live the life of a Penn Stater for a day. Students will shadow a current Penn State Greater Allegheny student as they attend a college class, tour the campus and eat lunch in the dining hall. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Room 119 of the Frable Building. Students must register in advance and may choose between two dates: Jan. 29 or Feb. 5. Daily shuttle service available
Students at Penn State Greater Allegheny have access to a shuttle seven days a week. On weekends, the shuttle stops on campus at the side resident life parking lot near the steps, and on weekdays at the bus terminal near the Frable and Main buildings.

Greater Allegheny faculty member releases book
Penn State Greater Allegheny Associate Professor of English Mary Ellen Higgins’s book, “Hollywood’s Africa after 1994” was recently released. The book is a result of research funded by a Research Development Grant from Penn State Greater Allegheny in 2007.
Penn State commencements take place across Pennsylvania
On May 3 and 4, approximately 3,400 students received degrees at Penn State campuses other than University Park across the Commonwealth.

Penn State Greater Allegheny registrar receives University-wide award
Victoria Garwood, Penn State Greater Allegheny campus registrar, will be honored by Penn State University President Rodney Erickson on May 10 as a recipient of the University Staff Advisory Council Award for 2013.
Young becomes first Penn State librarian elected president of ALA
Courtney Louise Young, head librarian at the J. Clarence Kelly Library at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been elected as 2014-15 president of the American Library Association (ALA). Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State, noted, "Courtney Young is the first Penn State librarian to hold this honor and will bring our University to the table of this policy-making body of the ALA."
Penn State Greater Allegheny wins PSUAC title
After falling 3-0 in their first game, Penn State Greater Allegheny (28-15, 19-3 PSUAC), led by sophomore right-hander Matt Klena, defeated Penn College 10-1, clinching the program's second Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Tournament championship in the last three years.

Greater Allegheny to launch CPA program in May
A series of one-day sessions will be offered this summer as part of the certified public accounting program at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Participants receive continuing educations credits for the eight-hour courses.
Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses
Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Greater Allegheny announces spring 2013 commencement
Penn State Greater Allegheny’s spring 2013 commencement will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, in the Wunderley Gymnasium. Chancellor Curtiss E. Porter will preside as diplomas are conferred to students receiving baccalaureate and associate degrees. President and CEO of MARC USA, Michelle Fabrizi, will be the keynote speaker.
Student research conference set for April 11
Penn State Greater Allegheny students will display their research projects at the campus Student Research Conference, in the Ostermayer Room of the Student Community Center from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.
Psi Chi honor society inducts new members
Penn State Greater Allegheny's chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct new members April 10, during a 5:45 p.m. ceremony and reception in the Traina Room, Student Community Center. The ceremony will be followed by the campus’ Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. in the Wunderley Gymnasium.
Summer classes available at Penn State Greater Allegheny
A number of classes will be offered as part of Maymester at Penn State Greater Allegheny this summer. Students can take classes in a compressed format and still have plenty of time to work or do an internship.
Greater Allegheny Campus Choir to sing in historic event
The Penn State Greater Allegheny A Cappella Melody Lions will participate in the Music for the Spirit Festival, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 20, at the University of Pittsburgh’s Petersen Events Center.
