Penn State Greater Allegheny will hold its 30th annual Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in the Wunderley Gymnasium on campus. Chancellor Curtiss E. Porter will preside. Nearly 100 Penn State Greater Allegheny students will receive awards for academic achievement and leadership.

Penn State Greater Allegheny, for the fifth year, is a proud sponsor of the Silkscreen Asian American film festival. The eighth annual festival will be held May 10-19 at various Pittsburgh Filmmaker locations, showcasing films and filmmakers with origins in India, Japan, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Iran, and more.

Julia Spicher Kasdorf, professor of English and women's studies in the College of the Liberal Arts; Veronica Montecinos, professor of sociology at Penn State Greater Allegheny, and Jeffery Sharp, associate professor of business law in the Smeal College of Business, have received the Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching and have been named 2013 Penn State Teaching Fellows.

2013 Faculty/Staff Award recipients announced, lauded for achievements

Each year, Penn State honors several members of its faculty and staff for the highest levels of academic excellence, outstanding leadership and meritorious service. The 2013 Faculty/Staff Award recipients reach across campuses, colleges and administrative units and exemplify best practices and achievements among Penn Staters reflecting the University's mission of teaching, research and service. The honorees will receive their awards at a ceremony at noon Monday, March 25, at the Nittany Lion Inn.

Board approves 2013-14 room and board rates

Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (March 15) approved room and board rates for the 2013-14 academic year. The average room and board rate, which includes a standard double room and the most common meal plan, will be $4,685 a semester, a 4.23 percent increase over 2012-13. The increase addresses a projected rise in food and utilities expenses, as well as necessary maintenance, facility renewal and strategic needs.

Spring theatre production at Greater Allegheny to present 'Merlin in the Middle'

As part of this year's Teaching International focus on the Celtic nations, professor of theatre arts Jay Breckenridge's Theatre 208 class will present "Merlin in the Middle: Of the King Arthur Legend" at 7:30 p.m. April 25 to 27, in the Fitness and Cultural Center. The working script includes the appearance of a Druid Chorus to take the audience back in time to the sixth and seventh centuries, when the events of Arthur's and Merlin’s story "really" took place.

Gadowsky to join Penn State Coaches Caravan on May 9

Head men’s hockey coach Guy Gadowsky will join the 2013 Penn State Coaches Caravan Thursday, May 9, during stops at Penn State DuBois and Pittsburgh. The luncheon in DuBois will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the reception in Pittsburgh will begin at 6 p.m. on the final day of the Caravan.

Young becomes first Penn State librarian elected president of ALA

Courtney Louise Young, head librarian at the J. Clarence Kelly Library at Penn State Greater Allegheny, has been elected as 2014-15 president of the American Library Association (ALA). Barbara I. Dewey, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications at Penn State, noted, "Courtney Young is the first Penn State librarian to hold this honor and will bring our University to the table of this policy-making body of the ALA."

After falling 3-0 in their first game, Penn State Greater Allegheny (28-15, 19-3 PSUAC), led by sophomore right-hander Matt Klena, defeated Penn College 10-1, clinching the program's second Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) Tournament championship in the last three years.

Greater Allegheny to launch CPA program in May

A series of one-day sessions will be offered this summer as part of the certified public accounting program at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Participants receive continuing educations credits for the eight-hour courses.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Penn State Greater Allegheny’s spring 2013 commencement will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, in the Wunderley Gymnasium. Chancellor Curtiss E. Porter will preside as diplomas are conferred to students receiving baccalaureate and associate degrees. President and CEO of MARC USA, Michelle Fabrizi, will be the keynote speaker.

Psi Chi honor society inducts new members

Penn State Greater Allegheny's chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct new members April 10, during a 5:45 p.m. ceremony and reception in the Traina Room, Student Community Center. The ceremony will be followed by the campus’ Honors Convocation at 7 p.m. in the Wunderley Gymnasium.
