Change in Presque Isle Bay status based on Penn State Behrend analysis

The U.S. Department of State’s decision to lift Presque Isle Bay’s designation as an area of environmental concern was based on more than 20 years of research, much of it led by the staff at Pennsylvania Sea Grant, a partnership of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College; the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The three members of Piaclava are Beata Moon, Benjamin Fingland, and Jessica Meyer.

Piaclava, a viola-clarinet-piano trio, will close the 23rd season of Music at Noon: The Logan Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

Piaclava performs at noon on Thursday, March 21, in the McGarvey Commons of the campus' Reed Union Building. Admission is free and free reserved parking will be available in the Reed lot.

ERIE, Pa. -- In December, when she was selected to dance at THON -- the Penn State IFC/Panehellenic Dance Marathon -- Melanie Koster bought new shoes. She picked Skechers, which have extra cushioning in the soles.

Bourquin scores 1,000th point, then adds 60 more

Senior forward Holly Bourquin scored her 1,000th point Jan. 19 and has since added 60 more.

"She still has a lot of time left," said Roz Fornari, head coach of the Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, women's basketball team. "We'll see at the end of it where she fits into the record books."

Bourquin, of Fox Chapel, is just the 10th player in the program's history to pass the 1,000-point mark. She has averaged 10.9 points in each game this season.

Penn State Behrend inducts first members of engineering honor society

Members of the new Engineering Honor Society at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, are, by definition, among the best in their discipline: Only the top 1/8th of juniors and the top 1/5th of seniors are eligible.

They are expected to get even better. Tau Beta Pi members are required to tutor and do community service, and to be active at both social events and professional seminars.

School of Engineering names director for research, technology transfer

Greg Dillon, Ph.D. has been named associate director for research and technology transfer by the School of Engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. In this new role Dillon will have responsibility for expanding the school's research initiatives, increasing collaboration with industry and further integrating research and development activities into the undergraduate engineering curriculum.

Psychology colloquium to focus on family reunification policies

A University of Akron sociologist will discuss her research on family reunification as public policy at the next Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior event at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

"Does Protecting the Family Hurt the Child? Comparing Outcomes for Maltreated Children at Home and in Foster Care" is the title of Stacey Nofziger's presentation. She will speak at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21, in 180 Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center, 5101 Jordan Road. Admission is free and open to the public, and free parking will be available in the deck south of Burke, off Technology Drive.

Penn State Behrend forms history honor society

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will induct the first members of its History Honors Society in April. The chapter, a part of Phi Alpha Theta, will promote research and publishing efforts by students who have completed 12 credit hours of history.

Erie students create four digital games in 48-hour Global Game Jam

Pac Man was born in a pizza box. The Japanese programmer Toru Iwatani based the character on a pizza he was eating.

The four games created by students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, last week were inspired by the sound of a heartbeat - the assigned theme for this year's Global Game Jam, an annual hacker marathon - and by a ticking clock: The teams had just 48 hours to create, code and upload their games, which anyone can now play.

The time limit kept the games simple. "When you know you only have two days, you think small," said Matthew White, lecturer in game development. "You don't dream up a space opera."

Behrend class asks students to build a better grocery bag

The door to Rob Weissbach’s dollhouse is wired with a buzzer and a bright LED light – protection against any Weebles that might wobble in. On April 18, Weissbach, an associate professor of engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, used the dollhouse to teach basic circuitry to some seventh-graders from Warren County’s Eisenhower Middle School, on campus for the annual 21st Century Kids program.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.
