It was television, so he wore a helmet: a spike-topped Viking cap. He also brought a baseball bat. David Artuso, a 2011 graduate of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, swung that bat hard, smashing it into an iPhone. He was hoping to impress the A-list investors on ABC's "Shark Tank."

Two dozen members of Reality Check, a service club at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, are spending their spring break at a permaculture farm in Puerto Rico -- planting, pruning, mulching and applying organic fertilizer, growing food that will be distributed in western Puerto Rico, and learning the basics of bamboo and earthbag construction, a modern take on ancient adobe architecture.

'Art of the Ask' classes to explore different fundraising styles

'Art of the Ask,' a five-week course developed by the Office of Community and Workforce Programs at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, will explore the different strategies for asking donors for major gifts. Classes will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning March 26.

Penn State Behrend team competes in CFA Investment Research Challenge

The Investment Research Challenge team at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, placed third at the Pittsburgh regional competition for the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute Research Challenge. The students produced a detailed financial report and valuation of Consol Energy Inc., a leading producer of Appalachian coal and natural gas, and presented their findings to a panel of high-profile financial analysts.

In high school, Kohl Crecelius learned to crochet so that he could have unique hats to wear while snowboarding. In college, Crecelius realized that mastering a simple, marketable skill like crochet could profoundly impact the globe’s poorest citizens.

Crecelius will recount how his a-ha moment spawned a global economic movement when he discusses “Sustainable Social Entrepreneurship: Creating a Cycle of Success” at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Wednesday, March 20.

Penn State’s online Intercollege MBA (iMBA) takes this educational analysis a step further by involving iMBA students in real-world learning. From May 12 to 17, the 54 students who have been working together online met in person to study at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Behrend class asks students to build a better grocery bag

The door to Rob Weissbach’s dollhouse is wired with a buzzer and a bright LED light – protection against any Weebles that might wobble in. On April 18, Weissbach, an associate professor of engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, used the dollhouse to teach basic circuitry to some seventh-graders from Warren County’s Eisenhower Middle School, on campus for the annual 21st Century Kids program.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

4/23/13

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.
