Penn State Beaver to host summer youth camps

This summer the Office of Continuing Education will offer eleven educational, academic and athletic summer youth camps on campus. Camps are open to children from kindergarten through eighth grade and will be held during the week of July 14. The camps are: (1) Imagination Station - centered around J.K.

Father Bourgeois to speak on campus

The public is invited to attend a free presentation by Father Roy Bourgeois at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, in the campus Library Seminar Room. Bourgeois is the founder of The School of the America Watch, an office that conducts research regarding the United States Army School of the Americas (SOA), located in Fort Benning, Georgia. He served as a U.S. Navy officer for four years, received a Purple Heart, was ordained in 1972, and produced a 1983 documentary, Gods of Metal, that received an Academy Award nomination.

Three faculty members receive University honors

The Commonwealth College has honored John Chapin, assistant professor of communications, and Chris Wu, associate professor of mathematics, and the campus has honored Terrie MacLellan. Chapin is the recipient of the Commonwealth College Distinguished Faculty Outreach Award; Wu is the recipient of the Commonwealth College Excellence in Teaching Award; and MacLellan is the recipient of the Penn Stater of the Quarter Award. Chapin was honored for his work in community awareness of school violence prevention and promoting excellence in public speaking via the campus' annual Forensics Tournament.

Penn State Beaver named Not-for-Profit Business of the Year

The Beaver County Chamber of Commerce has named Penn State Beaver as the recipient of the 2003 Not-for-Profit Business of the Year Award. Gary B. Keefer, campus executive officer, accepted the award on behalf of the campus at the chamber's recent gala / dinner dance held at Seven Oaks Country Club. Each year the chamber presents the award to a non-profit business or organization that exemplifies success and innovation in its ongoing development and community outreach.

Continuing Education offers training in HIPPA, AutoCAD

This month the Office of Continuing Education offers training programs in health insurance compliance and AutoCAD. Two courses in Compliance Training and Education for the Federal Health Insurance Portabilty and Accountability Act (HIPAA) are offered, as well as a specialized course in Advanced AutoCAD. State's high school computer fair held on campus

The Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology and the Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit recently sponsored the Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair at Penn State Beaver. The annual event is designed to highlight Pennsylvania high school students' computer applications skills and knowledge. Students are asked to demonstrate creativity, learn how to convey information dynamically and enhance the overall learning process.

Annual Forensics Tournament to be Held at Penn State Beaver

Middle and high school students are invited to participate in the annual Forensics Tournament on March 14 at Penn State Beaver. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. in the lower lobby of the Study Learning Center, followed by opening remarks at 8:15 a.m. in the theatre adjacent to the lobby. Sessions will be conducted at various campus locations throughout the day. The tournament includes competition in the areas of prose, dramatic interpretation, poetry, original oratory, dramatic duo, and impromptu speaking. The day concludes with an awards presentation at 3:30 p.m. in the theatre.

Adult Literacy Action Offers Free Tutor Training Workshop

Penn State Beaver's Adult Literacy Action program is offering a free Tutor Training Workshop for anyone interested in volunteering as one-on-one tutors or classroom aides. The twelve-hour workshop is scheduled for March 11, 13, 18, and 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Adult Literacy Action office, 336 College Avenue, Beaver. The workshop will be offered again on April 21, 23, 28, and 30 at the same time and location. The workshop provides training to teach reading, writing, math, and daily survival skills to adult learners.

Annual Spring Children's Play at Penn State Beaver

Reservations are now being taken for Penn State Beaver Theatre's annual spring children's play. This year's production is "Cinderella." Beaver campus students will perform under the direction of Carol Schafer, assistant professor of theatre, integrative arts, and women's studies. Performances for schools and educational groups will be presented at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on March 25 and 27 and April 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 and 24 in the campus Study Learning Center Auditorium. The public is invited to attend on March 30 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Joe Martin to Speak at Penn State Beaver on Feb. 25

Joe Martin, former assistant journalism professor at Florida A & M. University, will give a free presentation on his theory of why racism exists and how it can be halted on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m., in the Technology Classroom, Laboratory Classroom Building, at Penn State Beaver. The public is invited to attend. Martin, author of "Tricks for the Grade" and "Straight Talk: Joe Martin's Treasury of Quotes," has held previous positions in state and federal government. The program is presented as part of Penn State Beaver's celebration of Black History Month.

A Healthy Red

The sign says "No Students Allowed." Elizabeth Foley and Joseph Slak proceed anyway, through the chemistry lab at Penn State Beaver and into a back room normally used by lab technicians preparing experiments for their next lecture. The two students have worked in this room before, and they have the milk crates stacked with graphs and notes to prove it. Under fluorescent lights, surrounded by lab equipment, they put on their white coats, goggles, and gloves. Then they open a bottle of wine.
