Altoona Alumni Society plans Winter Plunge fundraiser at Canoe Creek

A jump into the waters of Canoe Creek State Park will help raise funds for two causes at Penn State Altoona.

On Jan. 27, participants in the Penn State Altoona Alumni Society's inaugural Winter Plunge will test their mettle in a special fundraiser for the society's scholarship program and Penn State Altoona Benefitting THON. Sheetz Inc. is the title sponsor of the Winter Plunge, scheduled for 1 p.m., at Canoe Creek.

Two art exhibitions to kick off the new semester

Classical music project comes to Penn State Altoona

The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State is partnering with the Penn State Altoona Division of Arts and Humanities to present free public programs Wednesday, Jan. 16, featuring Christopher O'Riley, concert pianist and host of NPR's From the Top, and Matt Haimovitz, Grammy-nominated cellist.

New student enrichment program Leadership for Life launches

Penn State Altoona will launch its newest student enrichment program, Leadership for Life (LFL), on Jan. 12 when the inaugural class meets for a kickoff retreat. The class then will meet biweekly for the spring semester.

LFL is a civic engagement program, designed to inspire and prepare students to get involved in their communities as young adults. The program will cover topics such as economic development and the business community, networking, board service and elected office, fundraising for nonprofits, issues in our society, leaving a legacy, critical thinking, teamwork, goal setting and how to make an impact your first few years out of college. Sessions will include presentations by community and business leaders from Blair County as well as the Pittsburgh area.

An application hosted on a server on Penn State's University Park campus that contained 1,406 Social Security numbers, all of which belong to students who were enrolled at Penn State Altoona before 2005, was found to have been compromised using a technique known as SQL injection.

As soon as the University became aware of the issue, the server was immediately taken offline. Although there is no evidence that the information has been used by unauthorized individuals, the University's policy is to take a cautionary stance and notify individuals who may have been affected. This response is in line with the Pennsylvania Breach of Personal Information Notification Act, which went into effect in 2006 and mandates that the University notify anyone whose personally identifiable information is potentially disclosed when a computer is lost or compromised.

Professor explores American culture through comedy's history

Jerry Zolten has researched humor for years - not a deep exploration of the physiological reaction that leads to a laugh, but rather what those chuckles say about us and the times we live in.

"It's like pouring hot water on flowers if you get too serious about this," said the associate professor of communication arts and sciences, and American studies at Penn State Altoona.

Nonetheless, Zolten's course "We Were What We Laughed At: A Cultural History Through Stand-up Comedy" isn't always a laughing matter, he said.

Faculty who use newspapers in classroom can get free subscriptions

Faculty who include newspaper readership as part of their required coursework can receive a daily subscription of that paper at no cost -- as well online classroom resources, case studies and additional teaching support materials made available by The New York Times and USA Today -- as part of the Penn State Student Newspaper Readership Program. Faculty interested in receiving the free newspapers for use in their classrooms should email the Penn State Student Newspaper Readership Program at newspapers@psu.edu and provide their contact information, office address and a copy of the course syllabus requiring student newspaper readership as an email attachment.

Trading Club receives monetary gift

A ceremony designed to recognize the success of students participating in the Penn State Altoona Trading Club unexpectedly evolved into a philanthropic celebration when Carroll P. and Diane S. Osgood, of Hollidaysburg, Pa., presented a gift to the college to sustain their original funding of the club's activities.

The ongoing philanthropic support of the Osgoods enables the Penn State Altoona Trading Club to present monetary awards to students managing an investment portfolio on a virtual trading platform while acquiring a broader understanding of how financial markets function.

Couple provides opportunity to honor football team with scholarship

Fans of Penn State football have a new opportunity to honor the 2012 Nittany Lions, thanks to the generosity of Philip and Rosalind Sky, longtime friends of the University. The Skys have committed $50,000 to create The STAR Football Scholarship honoring Coach O'Brien and the 2012 Football Team, and they are encouraging other fans to enhance its impact by making their own gifts to the new endowment.

Book by Penn State laureate, associate dean chosen as gold medal winner

"The Restaurant at the End of the World," the second novel by Kenneth Womack, Penn State Altoona's associate dean for Academic Affairs and the 2013-14 Penn State laureate, was selected as the gold medal winner in the 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards. The novel was honored for Best Regional Fiction (Mid-Atlantic), and Womack will receive the medal on May 29 at a ceremony in New York City.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Penn State Altoona held its annual Research Reception on April 16, 2013. The reception honors those who received external grants and/or who have published books over the last year. Twenty-three grants and ten books were recognized during the reception.
