Penn State's Board of Trustees Friday (March 15) approved room and board rates for the 2013-14 academic year. The average room and board rate, which includes a standard double room and the most common meal plan, will be $4,685 a semester, a 4.23 percent increase over 2012-13. The increase addresses a projected rise in food and utilities expenses, as well as necessary maintenance, facility renewal and strategic needs.
A gift in kind presented to Penn State Altoona by Delta Health Technologies LLC will enable the campus' nursing students to utilize electronic medical records software designed to document clinical services in a home health environment. Valued at nearly $300,000, Delta’s gift involves 200 licenses for the medical software package titled ClinicalVirtuoso.

Lauren Hatch, an Altoona native and a May 2012 graduate with a degree in letters, arts and sciences, currently is a research assistant for professor Sandra Petrulionis at Penn State Altoona. But in March, she will embark on her life’s dream when she spends the next 27 months in Costa Rica with the Peace Corps. “When I found out I was accepted,” she said, “I was overjoyed. I started crying. This is something I can say I’ve wanted more than anything else in my life.”
Altoona residents Stephen G. and Nancy L. Sheetz have made a leadership gift commitment to Penn State Altoona to create a Trustee Scholarship and scholarship endowment in support of the Sheetz Fellows program. The commitment is the couple’s second to the campus during For the Future: The Campaign For Penn State Students.

"The Restaurant at the End of the World," the second novel by Kenneth Womack, Penn State Altoona's associate dean for Academic Affairs and the 2013-14 Penn State laureate, was selected as the gold medal winner in the 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards. The novel was honored for Best Regional Fiction (Mid-Atlantic), and Womack will receive the medal on May 29 at a ceremony in New York City.
Five students earned cash awards as winners of Penn State Altoona’s Pechter Business Plan Competition, held April 26, during the Gown Meets Town Student Showcase event at the Devorris Downtown Center in Altoona.
Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Penn State Altoona held its annual Research Reception on April 16, 2013. The reception honors those who received external grants and/or who have published books over the last year. Twenty-three grants and ten books were recognized during the reception.
