Galleries feature work of Altoona faculty, staff

Penn State Altoona's first annual faculty and staff exhibition features the works of 25 members of the College's staff and faculty. The exhibition opened in the Sheetz and McLanahan Galleries on Thursday, May 22, and will run through Friday, June 6. The work includes painting, photography, woodworking, jewelry, quilting, stained glass and other handcrafts. An idea conceived by Carol Isenberg, staff assistant in the Registrar's Office, the exhibition was designed to celebrate the creative work of Penn State Altoona employees. For more information, visit

Female high school students studying science at Penn State Altoona

Twenty-eight female seventh and eighth grade students from seven local school districts will participate in a unique career development opportunity at Penn State Altoona on Thursday, May 15, as they learn about the fields of science and engineering. The hands-on workshops encourage girls to begin thinking about non-traditional career paths for women, develop leadership, team-building and communication skills, consider math, science, and technical skills required to succeed in the world of work, and encourage the girls to think creatively and set goals for their future.

Oldest Penn State Altoona graduate to lead commencement

Penn State Altoona will be recognizing a special guest at its upcoming commencement. Mildred Turner, the oldest Penn State Altoona graduate, will process at the ceremony on Saturday, May 10. At the age of 77, Turner was awarded an associate in arts degree in letters, arts and sciences with a 3.15 grade point average at the end of fall 2000. After working for 22 years at Warnaco Co., Turner retired in 1990 at the age of 67. She immediately contacted Penn State Altoona's adult center about enrolling after learning about Penn State's GO-60 program.

Campus film series concludes with Beatles movie musical

Penn State Altoona's spring film series wraps up this weekend with a showing of "A Hard Day's Night" on Sunday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the Downtown Conference Center Cinema. "A Hard Day's Night" (1964) stars John, Paul, George and Ringo in their first film, a comedic romp directed by Richard Lester. Roger Ebert calls it "One of the great life-affirming landmarks of the movies." Alun Owen's script wisely builds on the Beatles massive celebrity at the time and much of the film has them trying to escape from mobs of teenage girls.

De Reus receives Women in Leadership award

Lee Ann De Reus, assistant professor of human development and family studies and women's studies at Penn State Altoona, was selected as this year's recipient of the Women in Leadership award winner. Given each year by the Altoona Liaison to the Pennsylvania State University Commission for Women, this award is designed to recognize women employees at Penn State Altoona who have demonstrated outstanding leadership.

Spanish education students share knowledge with local children

Words like "hola" and "buenos dias" may be foreign to most elementary-age school students, but not to the students at McAuliffe Heights at Irving Elementary School. For the past year, education students from Penn State Altoona have been working with third- and fourth-grade students at McAuliffe Heights to help them learn the basics of Spanish communication. Each of the five Penn State students taught a 30-minute lesson once a week, complete with homework assignments, tests and Spanish craft activities.

CNN's Karl to deliver Penn State Altoona's commencement address

Penn State Altoona will celebrate its largest graduating class to date on Saturday, May 10 beginning at 10 a.m., as 247 students receive their degrees -- including 238 students enrolled in Penn State Altoona majors. Spring commencement ceremonies also will be held for the first time in the College's outdoor Spring Run Stadium. CNN Congressional correspondent Jonathan Karl will deliver the commencement address. He was named Congressional correspondent for CNN in April 2000.

Senator Jubelirer hosts student government workshop

State Senator Robert C. Jubelirer (R-30th district) will host his 22nd "Under the Capitol Dome: A Student's Guide to State Government" program on Thursday, May 8, at Penn State Altoona. The seminar introduces students from approximately 20 high schools in Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon and Fulton counties to the legislative process, offering them an opportunity to discuss current issues with individuals who make and influence state government decisions.

Music students showcase talent at end-of-year concerts

Students in several of Penn State Altoona's musical ensembles will showcase their talents at a number of semester-end concerts throughout the upcoming weekend. The University Jazz Band and University Choir from Penn State Altoona will hold a concert on Saturday, May 3 at 2:30 p.m. The Ivyside String Ensemble will present its concert Sunday afternoon, May 4, at 2:30 p.m. "Essence of Joy" Gospel Choir will conclude the weekend's activities with a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Students turn trash to treasure for United Way

Penn State Altoona students will have the opportunity to donate any usable items they don't want to take home with them and help the local community through the Trash to Treasure program. From April 28 to May 10, students can place their donations in collection boxes located in the College's four residence halls. United Way of Blair County will collect and sort the items, and have a community-wide yard sale, with all proceeds benefiting the United Way.

Varsity tennis team concludes season with championship title

Penn State Altoona's men's tennis team captured its fourth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) title in five years this past weekend as the Lions posted a team score of 11 to outdistance Frostburg State University and Penn State Behrend. Area youth celebrate National Dance Week at Penn State Altoona

More than 170 area youth from Blair, Centre, Cambria and Somerset counties will help kick off National Dance Week on Sunday, April 27, for Penn State Altoona's First Annual Day of Dance. Young dancers ages 13 and up who are enrolled in area dance schools will attend workshops and classes in modern dance, jazz and ballet. Following the day's sessions, the students will present a "Movement Choir Performance" beginning at 4:15 p.m. in the Adler Athletic Complex.

Arts and Heritage Festival on campus May 17-18

Penn State Altoona will host the annual Westsylvania Arts and Heritage Fesitval on campus Saturday, May 17, from noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, from noon to 6 p.m. The festival features a variety of performing and demonstrating artists, crafts, food vendors, and a Children's Village with activities and performances for young people. Book by Penn State laureate, associate dean chosen as gold medal winner

"The Restaurant at the End of the World," the second novel by Kenneth Womack, Penn State Altoona's associate dean for Academic Affairs and the 2013-14 Penn State laureate, was selected as the gold medal winner in the 2013 Independent Publisher Book Awards. The novel was honored for Best Regional Fiction (Mid-Atlantic), and Womack will receive the medal on May 29 at a ceremony in New York City.

Wireless networks coming to residence halls on multiple campuses

Housing will begin providing wireless networks this May that will eventually service all Penn State student rooms and apartments. Information Technology Services (ITS) will install and manage the large network for housing that will cover all residence hall buildings at University Park as well as the Altoona, Beaver, Berks, Erie, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton and Mont Alto campuses. The project will install approximately one access point radio in every three-student room to ensure robust network coverage. The estimated 4,200 access point radios will broadcast both the psu (authenticated) and attwifi (guest network) network IDs.

Penn State Altoona’s Ivyside Dance Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 25 and 26, in the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $5 for Penn State Altoona students and $7 for general admission. Children younger than 12 are free.

Penn State Altoona held its annual Research Reception on April 16, 2013. The reception honors those who received external grants and/or who have published books over the last year. Twenty-three grants and ten books were recognized during the reception.
