Search begins for dean of the College of Engineering

Penn State has announced a national search for the next dean of the College of Engineering. David Hall, dean of the College of Information Sciences and Technology, will chair the search committee. David N. Wormley, the Harold and Inge Marcus Dean of the College of Engineering, has announced his retirement after 21 years of service to the University.

Representatives from Canada, Guyana, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States attended the 9th International Law Enforcement Forum at Penn State, April 16-18, 2013. The Forum's workshop focused on "Protecting the Public, Protecting the Protector," giving special attention to improving safety at major public events, particularly after the Boston Marathon bombing.

"Developing Environmental Consciousness," an exhibition featuring photos by Penn State students in the Photography and the Environment course, will be on display April 29 to May 3 in the Borland Gallery. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 29.

West III, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, has played a key behind-the-scenes role as a consultant to the director and cast of the upcoming Warner Brothers film "The Great Gatsby." West is general editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and published Trimalchio: An Early Version of "The Great Gatsby" in 2000.

Volunteers needed for Special Olympics competition at Penn State

From June 6 to 8, more than 2,500 Special Olympians and coaches will convene at Penn State’s University Park campus for the annual Summer Games of the Special Olympics. Preparation for the four-day event begins days before the athletes arrive and volunteers are now being enlisted to help with dozens of pre-game activities.

The 21st Century Automotive Challenge will give visitors a chance to check out vehicles powered by a number of alternative energy sources, including electricity, compressed natural gas and biodiesel. Vehicles will be on display from 10 to 2 on Saturday, May 18, at the MorningStar Solar Home.

Project site work begins on HUB-Robeson Center lawn

Site work began on the HUB-Robeson Center (HUB) lawn this week in advance of a proposed HUB addition and renovation project. In preparation for the project, work is under way to install temporary units designed to house the Penn State Bookstore from June 2013 to July 2014 while existing space is renovated. Pending Board of Trustees approval, construction will begin in May 2013 and will be complete in May 2015.

Head men’s hockey coach Guy Gadowsky will join the 2013 Penn State Coaches Caravan Thursday, May 9, during stops at Penn State DuBois and Pittsburgh. The luncheon in DuBois will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the reception in Pittsburgh will begin at 6 p.m. on the final day of the Caravan.

Campus landmarks honor military service of Penn Staters

Memorial Day at Penn State is an appropriate time to reflect on those members of the University community who made the supreme sacrifice in military service to their country. The University Park campus holds a number of landmarks that commemorate those heroes.

High school students who are interested in the visual arts will learn how to make a portfolio of their work during the week-long camp.

Campers develop skills at Penn State’s youth summer camps

New this year, the School of Visual Arts Summer Art Camp (July 7 to 12) will teach high school students who are interested in the visual arts how to create a portfolio of their work. The camp’s theme, “Portfolio Processes,” underscores the goals of the program – to show campers how to create exciting artworks in different media and to develop a digital portfolio. The camp coincides with the 2013 Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.
