Online beekeeping course receives international recognition

A Web-based Penn State Extension course designed to help beginning and experienced beekeepers gain the knowledge they need to be successful has been recognized for online excellence. Beekeeping 101 was named an official honoree in the 2013 Webby Awards. The course was one of 11 honorees in the Education category.

Integrated project delivery (IPD) and building information modeling (BIM) are quickly reshaping the working methodologies of design firms where students will end up after graduation. Energy business and finance major offers new energy and land management option

Beginning in the fall of 2013, the Penn State John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME) will be offering a new energy and land management option as part of the bachelor of science degree in energy business and finance (EBF). Designed in consultation with the American Association of Professional Landmen, this new option will provide expertise in the acquisition of sub-surface exploration rights and enable Penn State students to seek challenging careers as exploration Landmen.

The festival, held in the Borough of State College and on Penn State's University Park campus, brings more than 125,000 visitors to the area each year.

Penn State’s online campus, the World Campus, is poised to more than triple students enrolled in online education programs from 12,000 to 45,000 within the next decade. The University is committing $20 million over five years from World Campus revenues toward this new expansion goal. Penn State President Rodney Erickson announced the goal today (April 29) in a letter to the University community.

West III, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, has played a key behind-the-scenes role as a consultant to the director and cast of the upcoming Warner Brothers film "The Great Gatsby." West is general editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and published Trimalchio: An Early Version of "The Great Gatsby" in 2000.

Penn State World Campus student is first Navy scholarship recipient

For five years, Justin Scinocco was a Navy special warfare combatant-craft crewman (SWCC), a member of an elite team that supports Navy SEALS. He served in Iraq in 2003. In 2011, he enrolled in Penn State's World Campus to prepare for a medical career. For his Navy service and academic achievements, Scinocco has been chosen to receive the first Alexander P. Fletcher Navy Student Award presented by the World Campus.

New process cleanly extracts oil from tar sands and fouled beaches

A new, more environmentally friendly method of separating oil from tar sands has been developed by a team of researchers at Penn State. This method, which utilizes ionic liquids to separate the heavy viscous oil from sand, also is capable of cleaning oil spills from beaches and separating oil from drill cuttings, the solid particles that must be removed from drilling fluids in oil and gas wells. Town-gown partnership seeks 'alcohol-free' downtown on State Patty's Day

A town-gown partnership that for more than a decade has been united against high-risk drinking is employing new tactics to keep downtown State College alcohol-free on what has become known as "State Patty's Day."

An agreement has been reached with downtown State College taverns and restaurants to halt the sale of alcohol on Feb. 23, the date set for this year's State Patty’s Day, an event created by students six years ago. Establishments will still offer food and non-alcoholic drinks, maintaining downtown’s appeal for responsible visitors.
