College students eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise more on days when they communicate more with their parents, according to researchers at Penn State.
"Only a third of college students consumes a diet that is consistent with national recommendations," said Meg Small, research associate in the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development.
Guide adds new voices to history of Gettysburg battle

For three days in July 1863, thousands of Gettysburg civilians and tens of thousands of soldiers were caught up in a battle that left often conflicting data and anecdotes. This makes writing about the Battle of Gettysburg both a dream and a nightmare for Civil War historians, according to a Penn State researcher.

IST grads, students explore San Francisco start-up scene

The second annual Start-up Week, which was held at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) March 18-23, 2013, featured more than 25 entrepreneurs from trailblazing companies such as Weebly, Reddit and Songsplit, who networked with students and dispensed advice on starting and growing innovative technology-based companies. Several IST students decided to foster the connections established with the entrepreneurs and educate themselves about the field of entrepreneurship by embarking on a trip to San Francisco, Calif.
Penn State earns school-record 8th Big Ten Championship

On the heels of the women's outdoor track and field team earning its fourth Big Ten Championship in the last six years, Penn State athletic programs have won a school-record eight Big Ten titles, including a record seven regular season crowns, during a tremendous 2012-13 athletic season. Also, the Nittany Lions' 13 Big Ten titles is the most in the 2011-13 two-year span, leading all other conference schools.

GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Project under way at The Navy Yard

A powerful collaboration of researchers, manufacturers and economic development officials are embarking on a groundbreaking demonstration project for smart-grid, net zero energy buildings called the GridSTAR Center — a Smart Energy Campus initiative at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Spearheaded by Penn State with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), the GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Structure is the first phase of the GridSTAR Center.

Kathleen Bieschke appointed new department head

Kathleen Bieschke will become the new department head for the Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE) Department in the College of Education at Penn State on July 1. In her new role, Bieschke will oversee two undergraduate, four master’s, and four doctoral programs for the college.

A Penn State literary scholar, James L. W. West III, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English, has played a key behind-the-scenes role as a consultant to the director and cast of the upcoming Warner Brothers film "The Great Gatsby." West is general editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and published Trimalchio: An Early Version of "The Great Gatsby" in 2000.

Penn State World Campus student is first Navy scholarship recipient

For five years, Justin Scinocco was a Navy special warfare combatant-craft crewman (SWCC), a member of an elite team that supports Navy SEALS. He served in Iraq in 2003. In 2011, he enrolled in Penn State's World Campus to prepare for a medical career. For his Navy service and academic achievements, Scinocco has been chosen to receive the first Alexander P. Fletcher Navy Student Award presented by the World Campus.
