The smaller components become, the more difficult it is to create patterns in an economical and reproducible way, according to an interdisciplinary team of Penn State researchers who, using sound waves, can place nanowires in repeatable patterns for potential use in a variety of sensors, optoelectronics and nanoscale circuits.

University’s International Center for the Study of Terrorism to close

Coordinators of Penn State’s International Center for the Study of Terrorism (ICST) have announced that the program will close on June 30. Program director John Horgan and senior research associate Mia Bloom have announced that they will assume new positions at the Center for Terrorism and Security Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, this summer, where they plan to continue their work.

Libraries’ Hayya is designated proxy for students with disabilities

Susan Hayya, coordinator for adaptive technology and services in University Libraries and a long-time champion of services for individuals with disabilities, has been designated Penn State's proxy for HathiTrust users with print disabilities. Through this program, eligible users at HathiTrust partner institutions will receive special access to in-copyright materials contained in HathiTrust, rather than having to physically search for the items through another library or store.

Libraries offer delivery of materials to University Park

The University Libraries will offer a new service beginning on June 24 that will give University Park faculty and staff the option of having library materials delivered to their office. Users who request materials through the “I Want It” service on the Libraries’ website will see a new pick up location option in the drop down menu — University Park Faculty/Staff Office Delivery. Selecting this option will enable users to have the materials delivered directly to their campus departmental address. This option also will be available for E-ZBorrow and Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) material.

Employees notified of policy on relationships with loan lenders

The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, requires institutions of higher education to publish a code of conduct with regard to employees' relationships with loan lenders. Penn State Policy FN22 applies to all Penn State officers, employees and agents who engage in any University business transactions with lenders who provide education loans.

Participants needed for ScholarSphere usability tests

Researchers are needed to participate in a series of usability tests for a new release of ScholarSphere, a secure repository service that enables the Penn State community to share research and scholarly work with a worldwide audience. The usability tests will be conducted from July 8 to 31, in Davey Laboratory, Instruction Room 211 (in the Physical and Mathematical Sciences Library) and anyone in the Penn State community can sign up to participate.

The University Libraries are offering free seminars for Penn Staters in citation management tools this summer. These introductory sessions to Zotero, EndNote and Mendeley are taught by librarians and are aimed at helping students and faculty learn how to organize their research sources.

Targeting neurotransmitter may help treat gastrointestinal conditions

Selective targeting of the neurotransmitter that differentially affects brain cells that control the two distinct functions of the pancreas may allow for new medication therapies for conditions such as diabetes, dyspepsia and gastro-esophageal reflux, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers. "This study differs from what's been reported previously about brain neurons that control the gastrointestinal tract," said R. Alberto Travagli, professor, Department of Neural and Behavioral Sciences, and lead investigator. "It provides further support to the idea that separate nerve pathways regulate the diverse functions of organs along the upper gastrointestinal tract."

Robinson, curator of art and affiliate associate professor of art history, is a specialist in modern American and European art, and teaches courses primarily on African American art.

Since 1995, Lawrence C. Ragan has led efforts to integrate new and emerging technologies into a variety of distance learning educational systems at Penn State. As director of faculty development for Penn State's World Campus, Ragan oversees the design and development of professional training systems and services to prepare faculty members teaching online and blended courses. For his contributions, Ragan will be recognized as a Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) Fellow at the 17th annual Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning in Orlando, Fla., in November.

New kind of antibiotic may be more effective against tuberculosis, anthrax

Diseases such as tuberculosis, anthrax, and shigellosis -- a severe food-borne illness -- eventually could be treated with an entirely new and more-effective kind of antibiotic, thanks to a team of scientists led by Kenneth Keiler, an associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Penn State. The team describes 46 previously untested molecules that target and disrupt an important step in the process of protein synthesis in bacteria, thereby making the bacteria incapable of replicating. This important step, known as "trans-translation," is a quality-control mechanism that is found in all species of bacteria. A $1 million gift from Tom Lucas, an industrial engineering alumnus, and his wife, Nicki, will create the Lucas Professorship in Industrial Engineering.
